91. A precious gift (A new baby)
"Zeina?" H'lak shifted nervously from foot to foot in the doorway of the weyr. He had been accosted by the healer as he got back from patrol with his unit and he had come as quickly as he could. The greenrider looked up from where she was lying in her bed with a small smile. The green dragon that was curled nearby, eyes whirling a worried yellow when she spotted the intruder.
"It's ok, Ostrasith, H'lak just came to say hello, he's not going to steal her." She turned back towards the door. She looked exhausted, deep dark circles under sleepy grey eyes.
He approached the bed, his footsteps surprisingly quiet for a man his size. Zeina shifted in the bed to reveal what he was here to see. His heart fluttered in his chest. He had never thought that he would ever feel the intense love he had felt when he had met Drydenth ever again, but it was pretty damned close. "You can pick her up, just be careful." Zeina sounded amused. He reached down, delicately picking the sleeping baby up. She squirmed a bit, making a small noise of protest and he froze. Zeina laughed. "She's fine. Just cradle her against your chest... yes, like that. See, she likes you!"
H'lak stared down at the tiny infant in his arms. She stared back up at him. Her eyes were still dark, but he could tell they would be pale grey like her mother's. Like a stormy sky. He smiled as she relaxed in his arms, still staring quietly up at him. He was barely aware of anyone else around them as he rocked his little daughter for the first time.

37. Fight and defend
K'dan was used to running and hiding. His whole life, he had been afraid of everything and everyone. He was used to the familiar terror that usually coursed through his veins, making him shake and making his whole body feel cold. What he was not used to was the rage. It had pretty much the same physical effect as the fear, his mind noted in an oddly detached way that reminded him of Empirith.
The men from the watch hadn't seen him there, as he quietly cleaned up the dining hall after the dinner hour. Even if they had noticed him, he was fairly sure they wouldn't have taken notice of the fact that his shoulder knot had a strand of pink that stood for Empirith. Maybe despite that they still would have kept talking, but K'dan liked to think that people had manners. He stormed into his room, starting to automatically straighten it out, trying to calm himself. He didn't want to scare Empirith. Moss chirped worriedly from her cushion and flew over to start preening his hair. Obviously he was bad at this trying to seem calm, thing.
What's wrong?[/color] Empirith landed gracelessly and entered. He still had a little blood on him, K'dan noticed, he'd have to clean the dragon later. The pink's eyes were whirring a worried orange. So much for not scaring him.
"Nothing," he muttered. He still wasn't used to talking with his mind, even after nearly a year of being bonded to the proper pink. He could feel that Empirith was still worried, so he continued. "There were just some watchriders talking, in the hall. The ones who were visiting. They were saying bad things about the dragons here." He paused. "They said that all the newer colours should be abolished. That they should be... culled." He could feel the pink's shock, echoing his own initial panic. He turned towards his dragon with a small, reassuring smile. "Don't worry, Log is keeping an eye on them." He slipped the knife he had stolen from the kitchens out from under his yellow uniform. "And I'll protect you."

24. My craft
Fall was L'rin's favourite time of year. He remembered with great fondness going out into the fields and spending all day harvesting grapes with his parents. But his favourite part of the whole process had been the crush. Ah the crush, jumping up and down in a vat, feeling the slimy, slippery grapes squish beneath his feet... It was sheer bliss.
Which was why he had been overjoyed when he had managed to cajole a holder he once knew to ship him a whole cart of grapes. It would probably only make a bottle or two and Qu'an would be rolling his eyes at his fellow warden's weird hobbies, but L'rin couldn't bring himself to care. He had set up in the dining hall, more than ready to share his craft, which he still loved, with the entire Weyr, much to Drydenth's mortification. his pants rolled up to his thighs, L'rin climbed into the vat, gleefully trampling the grapes and inviting any who dared to join him.

52. Peace at Last
Kaydian stumbled into his new space in the Weyrling dormitories still wearing his candidate robes, his yellow uniform clutched to his chest, Empirith on his heels. Log was already asleep on the pillow of what he assumed would be his bed and the new pinkrider made a beeline for it. Empirith sunk down onto the simple couch provided for him, relaxing at last.
Kaydian lay down as soon as he was sure that Empirith was comfortable, listening to the sounds of the other people in the barracks around him. He was used to sleeping in much less comfortable conditions, as a prisonner, so the barracks seemed like paradise. He let himself drift off, encouraged by the heavy, sated feeling he was getting from Empirith.
He woke up early, looking over at where the pink was still snoozing. Log had somehow migrated to Empirith's back and the two of them looked adorable together. Kaydian sat up and stretched then froze. He blinked. There were at least a dozen other people around, both dragons and humans, he was in an unfamiliar place that he hadn't really settled into yet and somehow he felt more relaxed than he had in years. The space was relatively tidy, although he could see a few things out of place and some candidate robes strewn haphazardly around by their owners, yet he did not feel the urge to go and pick them up. A huge grin split his face. Jessan would be so proud of him! He felt a pang of sadness at the thought. She was scary and she had let all the scary, bad people out, but he did miss her.
He got out of bed, walking over to Empirith's couch and settled down next to him, cuddling up against the warm pink hide. He let himself drift off again, feeling at peace for the first time since he could remember.

84. With Sweat and Blood and Tears, I Made This
K'dan smiled down at his completed work. As a perfectionist, it had taken him a long time to get his skills at making straps up to where he wanted them to be. He had discovered to his delight that he was good at this, unlike so many things that most of the other Weyrlings found easy. He had spent many hours sitting and watching how the older riders did it. A few had even enjoyed his interest and showed him little tricks. One had even taken out her special tools to patiently show him how to work the leather and make designs in it. That had taken even longer to get right, but his work had started to get some praise from the other Weyrlings.
One in particular had noticed. K'dan had barely been able to stammer anything in reply. He'd been too taken in by the laughing eyes and the honest smile to even be able to think coherent thoughts. That work had been poor, beginner work done on practice straps that Empirith would soon out grow. These... These K'dan had been working on for sevendays and sevendays, trying desperately to get right. The soft gloves that went with them had been hard to find leather for, but they had been embroidered and embellished to match the straps. All that was missing was a jacket, which was currently beyond K'dan's skills, but he knew that the object of his affections had gotten one recently from family, so it didn't quite matter.
He got up, carefully bundling the embroidered, embossed straps and gloves up and hurried off to class. He got there early, waiting by the door for one particular person. A few other Weyrlings trickled in and he tried to look as if he wasn't really waiting for someone. He perked up as a familiar set of footsteps crossed the threshold of the class and he held out the bundle hurriedly. "You said you liked my straps I made for Empirith so here. I made you some."

48. Sibling Rivalry
Being one of eight children definitely had its down sides. In Halak's opinion, little sisters were definitely one of these down sides. He had three of them, along with two little brothers, but none, he mused darkly, was as aggravating as Ridiane. When he had left home, Ri was only ten and already a pain. Although she had always been more interested in runnerbeasts and their care than anything else in their family's smithy, she had managed to find ways to make her big brother's life miserable. This was mainly because he was not fond of runnerbeasts and they seemed to like to bite and kick him. When he had left, he had not been all that sad to leave the conniving little brat who set him up to get mauled by temperamental runners.
He had still been glad to see her arrive on the back of a search dragon five Turns later, despite all her mischief. It was a big year for him, with the birth of his daughter and watching his sister Impress a Blue. While his joy at having his little daughter had not waned, his enthusiasm about Ridiane being a rider definitely had. And this was the last straw.
"You're overreacting." The bluerider was lazily sprawled on the bed, insult of insults, lazily rolling her eyes. "Honestly, Hal, you'd think that you were still back at the Hold."
He glowered down at her. "I am not. Get some clothes on."
She snickered, reaching over for her shirt. "It was a flight. Things happen. You of all people should know this. Besides, you and Zeina haven't been Weyrmates since before Haina was born. Get over yourself." She paused, putting the shirt back down. "In fact, why are you even here? This isn't your weyr! You always do this! You just can't stand me having anything you do!"
He was about to snarl out a reply when a soft sound alerted him to another presence. He wheeled around, red-faced in embarrassment. "Daddy! Daddy!" He smiled, crouching down as the toddler raced up to him and clung to his legs. He looked up to meet angry grey eyes.
"You two sound like the little ones in the crèche," she said evenly. "If you want to continue this ridiculous argument you may do so, but you will leave me out of it. I am not a trinket to be fought over. H'lak, take Haina, we will talk about this later. Ri... Get dressed, we have to talk."
H'lak glowered at his sister as he picked his little girl up. "Come on, Ina, let's go say hello to Drydenth while Mommy and Auntie Ri talk."
"Drydenth!" Haina cheered, clapping her hands. H'lak turned, looking over his shoulder at where his sister was getting dressed. His eyes narrowed as she grinned smugly at him. This wasn't over.
