1. Eating Glows
Trusith had once been told that everyone should try something at least once. Being the gullible creature he was, the newborn dragon had taken this piece of advice quite literally. He'd tried to eat vegetables, he'd tried to swim and had quite enjoyed it, and he'd even tried to talk like a wher. He wasn't going to rest until he'd tried everything. Or until he forgot that he was supposed to try everything.
Today, the thing that Trusith was going to try would give Yari a heart attack if she'd known. The brown was sitting in the weyrling barracks, ignoring his rider who was bent over her desk and reading some scrolls. while he usually would have been pestering her, his attention was focused on something else. That would be the basket of glows next to her, glowing softly.
Trusith licked his muzzle.
Then he lunged forward, paws swiping the basket off of the desk and sending the glows scattering on the floor. Yari let out a shriek of surprise, but Trusith ignored her for the moment. The brown gulped up some glows... and immediately began gagging and trying to spit them up. That was the worst thing he'd ever tasted!
"What are you DOING!?"
Trusith gave Yari an ashamed look, still gagging and coughing. Trying something new...

78. It's Called Tag
"Snowth, what are they doing?" Snowth lifted her head from where she had been bathing in the sun, one wing stretched above her supposedly napping rider to protect him from the sun. She followed his gaze to a group of the rare children that the prisonweyr had, screaming and laughing as they darted across the grass.
Playing, my love. Snowth answered, worried. Had F'ox's eyesight been getting worse? Could he not see that the children were enjoying themselves? Snowth looked down at F'ox's face, taking in the confused expression on his pale face.
"Why are they running, then? They're screaming!" F'ox was growing worried as well, his eyes wide. "They keep pushing each other. Are you're sure they're not fighting, Snowth?" He didn't want the children to fight. He wanted them to be happy. Children should always be happy.
It's called tag...[/i] Snowth's eyes turned yellow. Did he really not know?
Sometimes... F'ox broke her heart.

65. Looking My Best (Zalmask)
Zalmask sat in front of the tall mirror in Z's office, one paw lifted daintily in front of her. Kneeling on the ground in front of her was Z. His face was set in an almost comical look of concentration as he focused on Zalmask's paw... and he was tying a dark blue ribbon around her ankle.
"Do I really have to do this?" Z grumbled, despite the smile on his face. It was very rare that Z actually smiled now days, and just seeing the expression excited Zalmask. "I've fallen pretty far, mama. I'm sittin' here, putting ribbons on a wher." He'd also oiled her and made her hide nice and shiny, but that was neither here nor there.
Zalmask stood up once the ribbon was tied, observing herself in the mirror. Her thick, spiked collar had been replaced by a dark blue one that today lacked the spikes, and she had ribbons tied on her ears and ankles. Some might think she looked hilarious.
Zalmask thought she was beautiful.
"You're the prettiest thing I've ever seen, Zalmask." Z told his ugly, muscular wher... and meant it. He leaned forward and up to give her a kiss between the eyes, scratching her headknobs. "Prettiest sharding thing in the entire Weyr."
Zalmask crooned in agreement. She was most certainly looking her best.

57. The Child in Me (F'ox, Snowth, Weyrbrats)
F'ox was still watching the children, the same look of confusion on his face. Snowth had given up trying to explain what the children were doing, especially since they'd switched to a game that was much easier to play. They were kicking a ball around, having set up two goals between the trees.
A particularly strong kick sent the ball sailing through the air and colliding with Snowth's side, jolting her out of her drowsy state. F'ox stood, picking up the ball. The children who were rapidly coming to get the ball now slowed, becoming nervous and nearly fearful. Whatever F'ox had been about to say was lost as he realized that they were afraid of him. Of him? He was harmless!
A particularly brave child walked up, her face set in a stubborn mask. "Hey mister! Is this your dragon?" She asked, ignoring the ball he was holding. "Wow! She's really big!" Snowth snorted in amusement.
"Y-yeah... her name is Snowth."
"Do you want to play with us, mister? I've always wanted to play a game with a dragonrider!"
F'ox's face brightened, and he nodded eagerly. However, he cast a nervous glance to Snowth, like a child asking for permission. She nudged him gently.
"Okay! I'll show you how to play!" The girl took F'ox by the hand, practically dragging him behind her.
Snowth crooned happily, laying her head on her paws to watch her rider entertain the children. It was nice to see F'ox happy.

44. Disaster Strikes
Feel sick. The voice cut through his thoughts like a knife, Z’s attention trailing from the paperwork in front of him to his wher. Indeed, she didn’t look like she was feeling well at all. Her eyes were dim and tinged with gray, and her hide had lost a bit of it’s usual luster. Z cursed. When did she start looking so sickly? He hadn’t even noticed that she wasn’t feeling well.
“Why didn’t you tell me you weren’t feeling well sooner?” Z demanded, standing up and moving to his whers side. When he saw how sluggishly she moved to look at him, his heart clenched. Faranth, not another. I can’t lose another. The thought raced through his head unbidden, and he banished it just as quickly. She was fine, just a bit ill. “Did you anything bad, Mama?”
Didn’t want to worry Zalmask’s. Zalmask’s worry too much, needs to learn to relax again. Zalmask told him, shifting her massive head to rest it in his lap. Z lifted his hand to stroke her head, frowning. Not eat anything bad. Not eat anything. Not even little annoying mewy thing.
“... How long have you been feeling this bad, Zalmask?” How could he have missed this? Z’s thoughts raced, dread and guilt knotting in his stomach. He’d been so caught up in his own sulking he hadn’t even noticed that Zalmask was falling ill.
Not long. The wher told him. With a sigh, she went to sleep.

75. Wherless
“Isn’t that the wherleader?” Z looked up, searching for the one who had spoken. Z was sitting by the river, having escaped from the eye of both his firelizards and cat with success. The firelizards hanged onto him constantly, and it was nice to be able to escape them. To be able to breathe without something watching him.
“Not anymore. His gold died a sevenday ago. Can’t be a wherleader without a wher.” A second man said, not sounding all that concerned with the loss of one of Warden’s golds.
“Outlaws get her?”
“Nah, she was sick. Started coughin’ up blood and was dead before a sevenday was up, I heard.”
“Poor bastard. Why’d they let him out of the infirmary so early?”
“It was just a wher. It’s just like losing a canine, I imagine, ‘cept better because whers smell terrible. If I was him, i’d be happy to be rid of the ugly thing.”
“What do you think he’ll do? Think they’ll send him back to the north?”
“Nah. Probably just stick him in normal guard work. It’s not like he lost a dragon. I bet the lazy bastard was just trying to avoid doin’ some honest work, unlike the paper work he’d been doin’ before.” The other man paused. “Not like they’ll give him a new one, seeing as this is the second wher he’s lost.”
The men went on to discuss something else, most likely the outlaws. Z didn’t hear anything else. He’d already stood up, staggering away into the night.
He didn’t come back.

4. Bloodletting for Wherlets
Oh, that’s disgusting.
Zalmask’s need to shut up, before Zalmask slap the stupid off his face.
“... Wait, what?”
Zalmask’s not very bright. Zalmask smack him if he not shut up.
“Whers can talk!?”
Stupid, ugly humans talk!?
"Hey lady, i'm not the one drinking someones blood!"
Zalmask's is feeding people blood.
"... you're gonna be horrible to live with, aren't you?"

73. You Can't Fly! (wher)
At two months old, Zalmask saw her first dragon. The creature was visiting the wherhall for business, and the small wher had been so startled by it's massive size that she'd hidden behind Z. He didn't have the heart to tell her it was just a blue, and merely reassured her that she'd probably beat it in a fight.
Unfortunately, Zalmask was not a creature to let something beat her. So when the dragon took flight, she was determined to not let it beat her there where it had beaten her in size.
So Z was standing at the root of a tree, trying to convince his gold to come down. "Zalmask! Shard it all, you can't fly!"
Can to.
"Zalmask! Come down here!"
So she did. Her wings spread out and her head held up high, she jumped from the tree and ignored her handlers screams of terror and shock.
She also broke her wing in the fall and had to spend a sevenday in the infirmary, learning that she indeed can't fly.

74. Dragonless
It wasn't supposed to be like this. His life was supposed to be happy now, perfect and beautiful and with Snowth. But that wasn't the way his life had turned out.
Why!? F'ox wanted to scream, but nothing would come out. He was aware of being in the detox area, but he couldn't bring himself to care. Hadn't he suffered enough? Hadn't he bled, and cried, and died inside a million times to earn his happy ending?
So why was she gone?
Snowth? Where are you? Snowth? F'ox's mindvoice wavered, and he knew that there would be no answer. Because she was gone. He'd seen her fall from the sky, seen her go Between one last time with that bloodcurdling scream. ... Please come back.
This time, he did scream.

31. Protect Me
It was raining outside, and Z was vaguely aware that Zalmask couldn't sleep. Her restless mind continously brushed against his, and he felt a pang of sympathy for the newborn wher. It was her first time spending the night in the wherhall, and he knew she'd rather be outside and running about.
The reason why she was not allowed outside announced itself in a thundering boom. Zalmask let out a squeal, and before Z could say anything had crawled onto the bed and launched herself into his arms. He let out a grunt at her weight. She was still small enough to be carried, but the wher was growing quickly and weighed a ridiculous amount.
Loud noises! Zalmask cried, hiding her face against Z's chest. The man lifted a hand to stroke her head, muttering reassurances to the terrified wher. It was kind of funny, seeing a wher terrified of thunder. Z immediately felt guilty for the thought when she trembled at another boom of thunder. Of course she was frightened! She was only a baby!
"Shh, doll. It'll be okay." Z crooned, stroking the dragons head. "It's just thunder."
Thunder bad! Zalmask kill it! Zalmask let out a fierce snarl, and Z winced as her claws dug into his skin. She crooned an apology, but another burst of thunder had her curling up around Z and trembling violently.
"I'll protect you."
Protect me? Zalmask no need protect!
"That doesn't matter." Z grinned down at her. "I'm going to do it anyway."
Hmph. Zalmask's stupid

35. Getting into Trouble (Z and Araline - Nine years old)
"Told ya it'd work." Araline told her brother smugly. Z rolled his eyes, scoffing.
"I knew it would!" He retorted, and the pair fell into the comfortable silence only siblings could. Then, Araline suddenly grew quiet. She was staring at him in a way that made Zalman uncomfortable, and he shifted and wriggled in place until she spoke.
"Hey, Zally?" The nickname made him grimace, but the serious tone to her voice kept him from protesting. "We'll always do this, right?"
"Whaddaya mean, 'this'?"
"Getting into trouble and having fun... I mean, we'll always be together. Right?"
"Yeah. 'Course. I am your big brother. It's my job to make sure you don't end up lame like mom!" And then Z pinched her nose, which made her punch him, and then they ended up screaming at each other until they were caught and carted to their father for punishment for their prank.
