Iris had been keeping to herself. Gintineth was pressuring the woman to interact with the other outlaws, occasionally going out of his way to communicate with the unbonded outlaws. Iris had eventually been persuaded to make herself useful to the outlaws, the woman slinging her bloodstained satchel over one shoulder and departing into the inner caves. She had her knife that she'd stolen, she had the small Gintineth trailing behind her, and she had a makeshift ribbon made of a ragged piece of cloth keeping her hair out of her eyes. All in all, she was totally prepared to take on the evils that obviously rested inside of the cave.
I don't like caves. Iris informed Gintineth, sending a glare to the dragon as he carefully moved through the tunnel. They're too small. Too enclosed. She hated tight places. It reminded her of the straitjacket, of the tiny cage of Hold prison. A low, animalistic hiss escaped the woman as she looked around her dark surroundings. There's no light.
You should have brought a torch. [/i]Gintineth's masculine voice rumbled in her head, the gray unsympathetic to Iris's plight. I can see rather well. Would you like me to guide you?[/i] He didn't have the night vision of a wher, but Gintineth was definitely better equipped to the darkness of the caves then Iris was.
"Thanks for the sympathy. I did bring a torch, but as you should remember it burned out." Iris hissed, tilting her head to one side and falling silent. Do you hear tunnelsnakes? She asked Gintineth, only to hear a sickening snap and the faint cry of a dying animal. Iris smiled fondly at the dark shape that was her dragon. Never mind. She rested a hand on the soft hide. "I didn't think we'd be going this deep."
They are quite tasty. Gintineth remarked, licking his muzzle clean of blood. The dragon snorted at her admitted mistake, rolling his eyes. It's not like you to make stupid mistakes. Think next time. Shall we go back and find one?[/i]
Do you know the way back?
The marvelous, intelligent assassin... lost in a system of caves, having forgotten an extra torch. How the mighty have fallen.[/i]
"... Shut up and get me out of these caves."

Yekemi's plan for the day had been to spend the latter half of the morning and much of the afternoon hunting tunnelsnakes, followed by a bath in the hot springs and roasted meat for dinner. With luck, he'd be able to skin them and trade the skins to another outlaw. He didn't think he'd be able to get enough to have a decent amount of meat for trade, given how fast the things were. Well, even one small one would make a good enough dinner if added to the rapidly spoiling fruit in his section of the caves.
Yekemi paused when he heard the snapping sound and the voice. Someone else was here? Well, wasn't that somewhat irritating. He had no doubt that whoever it was would try to steal his kills. He gave up meat and skins to no one, not without being paid first. He shielded the basket of glows (borrowed from a particularly resourceful outlaw with his fishing pole as collateral) with one arm while the other clutched his pointy stick. The belt knife would stay in the pockets of his trousers until needed. Slowly, he crept towards the sound.
He recognized the voice when the second sentence was uttered out loud. Oh, it was her. That woman who was so protective of the Widow's Veil egg. No need for sneaking then; Yekemi was quite certain that her dragon would both be there and be able to smell him coming.
"Lost without a light?" he called out to the two of them as he stopped just as he was able to see them in the dim light of his glows. What had one of the others called her? "Ribbon, was it? Well, it would happen that I have a basket of glows and no company to talk with. A true shame."

Company.[/i] Gintineth's tone had switched from mocking to curious, the gray head turning so he could look at Yekemi. Tunnelsnake-man is here.[/i] He had never met the man, unlike his rider, but he could smell tunnelsnakes on him. Thus, Yekemi was stuck with an embarrassing nickname. The gray curled his tail around one of Iris's legs, relaxing as he realized that the man was technically part of his 'Weyr'. They call you Ribbon?[/i]
"Indeed." Iris answered, responding to both her dragon and the man who was visiting him. She seemed unwilling to talk to the man, hesitating for a moment. A low growl from Gintineth made the assassin sigh, the woman rubbing his snout with a pale hand. "Hunting?" She asked, taking note of he pointy stick she could see in the dark. "I'll join you. You can have my kills." She was looking for something other then tunnelsnakes and fluff balls. Light for her explorations would be well worth giving up tunnelsnakes.
She's not the most talkative. Gintineth informed Yekemi, with all the aura of an annoyed parent. Iris had fallen quiet again, cutting a glare to the gray dragon. It will be a pleasure conversing with you, comrade. This one forgot to bring back up light. Gintineth bopped Iris's head with his tail, earning himself another glare. But conversation would be much more pleasant if I knew your name, comrade. Gintineth was happy to converse with a fellow outlaw- He was a member of the glorious motherWeyr, after all!

Kills in exchange for light? That was a generous trade. Yekemi would have been more suspicious about it if they hadn't been deep in the inner caves, which made proper lighting a valuable resource. Eh, it meant a better dinner. That was nothing to sneeze at, as ever since the appearance of the hatchlings meat had been in short supply. They really needed herdbeasts; milk would be a wonderful thing to have now.
"Yes. Tunnelsnakes have good meat on them, though those rat-things are more tender. Your assistance would be appreciated," was all he said to Iris after he uncovered the basket of glows. The tunnel in front of them was clearly lit up, shadows from the rough surface standing out starkly. The outlaw who thought enough to bring it was going to get an extra skin for this.
He would have been fine with just silently hunting the beasts of the tunnels, but Gintineth derailed that. "I am Yekemi," he answered as he stuck the pointy stick into a crevice, hoping to drive something out. "What shall I call you, young hatchling?" What was with this 'comrade' thing, anyway? He was pretty sure the outlaws were about as unified as a cluster of felines, and any sub-factions were shifting too much for him to want to join one. Not that any stood a chance of superseding Jessan and Machi's power, anyway.

Iris was happy to go do her own thing now, turning away from Yekemi and glancing over the area around them. Gintineth could do the taking, even if he wasn't the most polite around. He actually cared about the unbonded outlaws, after all. Iris spotted a skittering shadow, and as Gintineth was being spoken to she dispatched it quickly. The tunnelsnake, beheaded, was tossed to Yekemi with little care for whether he caught it or got smacked in the face with a dead tunnelsnake. "If you spot a tunnel that leads to light, tell me." Escape routes in case of discovery were good. Iris knew this.
I prefer tunnelsnake-man. My name, comrade, is Gintineth. Gintineth informed his new companion, lowering his muzzle to poke it into a hole. There is one in here. I cannot reach it. She backed away so that Yekemi could kill the vermin, turning to watch Iris for a moment. She wasn't doing anything extremely interesting, just peering into holes in the rock, so Gintineth left her be.

As light from the glows suffused the small cavern, something irregular could be spotted in the corner. Rocks? Really oddly shaped rocks? But no. If one of the pair wandered closer they'd find a cluster of heavy crockery, left by whatever ancients used then vacated these caves. Whatever was in them was long ago eaten or otherwise used up. The three pots, however, are in perfect condition. They're watertight, with lids. They'd be excellent for storing things. Broken, the sharp shards could be used as the tip of some weapon.

Yekemi easily caught the tunnelsnake before it hit him, and with a smooth movement slung it over his shoulder. "I will," he answered her. Meat for light indeed. Well, any tunnels branching off would be good to explore. With all the tunnelsnakes around, there had to be a nest somewhere. Maybe a branch-off would lead to it. Yekemi hadn't had tunnelsnake eggs in such a long time.
"Have you been speaking with the others, Gintineth?" Yekemi asked conversationally as he jabbed the pointy stick into the hole. He felt resistance as it jabbed something, so he wriggled it around to widen the wound before trying to lever the creature out. "Some of them fear the new riders, think they'll take over." Well, that was mostly true. One outlaw, the Duster in the next cave over from his, did at least. He wouldn't be surprised if others did.
Finally the tunnelsnake came loose with an angry hiss. Yekemi wasted no time in decapitating it and adding the body to the pile. He continued on without so much as acknowledging the blood on his arms. "I wouldn't be surprised if others were angry about not being chosen during the hatching."
He was about to continue on about human nature and jealousy and the like when he spotted the crockery in the cavern. He hurried over to the closest pot and gently lifted it up. How old were these? He tried to identify the material, but they were covered in a layer of dust that made it hard to tell in glow-light alone. "So, Ribbon, how shall we divide these?"

Iris was sort of sad her projectile hadn't hit him, though her face didn't change in the slightest. Instead, she turned attention to her dragon. In the light of the glows, she could see that he was in a sorry state. He was in much better condition then his faster growing, larger siblings, but he still didn't have the proper food or oil. His hide was cracked and he was skinny, and it made Iris sad. If you catch a tunnelsnake, don't share it. Eat it yourself. She instructed him. Just because she was sharing her meat didn't need Gintineth had to.
Not as much as I would like to. Gintineth admitted, his tail twitched. The talk of outlaws fearing the dragons made him fall quiet. Iris, however, was not so quiet... for once in her life.
"As they should be." The woman muttered, turning blue eyes to her companion. "But whether they are fearful or jealous matters little to I. If they are threats, I will kill them" Iris seemed almost bored with the notion, turning attention to her gray. Yes, she would slaughter any who harmed him. He was hers.
Whether they fear us or not, we must all work together to survive. Gintineth said, finally, his eyes whirling a calm blue. Else the filth that is the dragon watch will descend upon our heads. The outlaws need us. Gintineth was entering speech mode, and Iris was thankful when the pots were discovered as it shut him up.
"One for each of us. We could trade the third for something and split the profits." Iris muttered, crouching down and looking over the pottery. "It's old, but in good condition." Her eyes grew distant and thoughtful, running a hand over one of the pots. "Something used to be in these caves."
I've heard some of the unbonded outlaws are having trouble finding their way back to the caves. Gintineth muttered into her mind, making Iris frown. What was here before the outlaws? Iris wanted to find out.

Yekemi couldn't care less about the availability of oil for the hatchlings. All that mattered to him was that food was in short supply. The outlaws were already making a noticeable change in the surrounding area what with their constant hunting and scavenging. There were some forty-odd people to feed, less after the maulings, and there simply wasn't enough for everyone to stay full. Also, Yekemi swore the prey animals were getting smarter.
Tunnelsnake was a boring food that got really old after a while, but it was one of the few animals that hadn't been driven off or hunted out already. These pots could help put some variety back in their diet. "These look fireproof enough. A good stew is a wonderful thing, and I bet there's someone in here who knows what plants make good seasoning."
And on that note... "We could trade it to Jiruyno. He'll want to be able to boil water, sterilize his tools." Whatever tools Jiruyno had. Even jars and knives could use a good dousing in boiling water from time to time. "It would be good to make nice with the healer, and he undoubtedly has something good to trade to us. Assuming the original owner doesn't pop out of time and steal them back." The last sentence was said with a short laugh and an attempt to brush the dust away from the pot.
