Sabriel
You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
Don't come back for me
Don't come back at all
You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
Don't come back for me
Don't come back at all
Name: Sabriel
Age: 26
Gender: Female
Prisoner: No
Crime: (Prisoners Only)
Craft/Rank: Journeywoman Harper/Guard/Weyrling
Appearance:
Amanda Seyfried
Looking at her, you wouldn't imagine that she was a guard, aside from her height. She looks the part of the polite, frail young girl with the darling voice. While she is polite, she is in no way frail, and her voice is nothing special. True, she was never built to be strong, but on closer inspection you can see that what bulk she does have is mostly muscle. While guarding, her weapon of choice is the compound bow and short sword; she simply doesn't have the strength for larger weapons, but what she does have is the speed and agility to wield what she can hold well.
Not that guarding was her occupation of choice. She would much rather be the frail young woman described above. Her thin frame and pale skin certainly fir the bill. As does her platinum blonde hair, long and straight, surrounding a slightly babyish face with large, deep marine hued eyes, straight nose and lingering smile. The fact that she's 5'8" does counter this image, but then nobody's perfect.
Clothing wise, she's attracted to the fine, but not the extravagant, with a particular love for flowing dresses, often in pale blue, green, or silver. Alas, neither her job nor her bank allow for many of these. She tends to be seen dressed in soft leathers and close fitting canvass smocks.
Dear, it took so long
Just to feel alright
Remember how to put back
The light in my eyes
Just to feel alright
Remember how to put back
The light in my eyes
Personality: As a child, Sabriel was confident, outgoing and social, to the point of being the center of attention many a time and relishing it. Well, for various reasons she's toned that down a bit now, in some cases rather a lot. Some small part of her, deep down, is still the same, but that part has been mostly buried by trials and training, making the girl more reserved than she ever was.
She still enjoys the company of others, to the point where she hates being alone. True, with Mogget always around she's never truly alone, and will often pour her heart out to the little feline for hours when she needs to, finding comfort in telling someone of all the things that she's bottled up inside her.
And bottle she does. Naturally a woman of strong emotions, Sabriel has since learned that many feelings are better left unexpressed. Some she can't show at the time, some she doesn't want to show, and others she simply doesn't want to think about, pushing them down into the back of her mind. The trouble with this is that they build up, to the point where it only takes something small and otherwise inconsequential to loose the tide inside her and for them all to come flooding out. This normally happens in front of Mogget and Mogget only, the cat being the only one she feels she can trust with this information in her current world.
She really hasn't been at Warden's long enough to find anyone else she could trust in such a way, even though she has made friends among the other guards and dragonriders. She can't help it: she's drawn to people, to crowds large and small, or to individuals, enjoying the simple company even if she doesn't say much. She often doesn't know quite what to say in many situations, but the draw is still there. She'll welcome you into her world, just don't expect her to tell you much about it.
Or you might be lucky. Behind the quiet exterior is a women who really just wants to get to know you. If you're willing to make a little effort and pull her out of her shell, you'll find a strong and loyal friend who will go far, far out of her way to make you happy. You will also have discovered her weak point. For Sabriel loves easily and, if she feels her love is returned, will love deeply. She's already had her heart broken once and, despite her efforts to prevent it, it could easily happen again.
But for now, it is the few children at Warden's that really hold her love. Since she has no child of her own to care for, she does her best to look after the children of others. Even so, she'll take a step back if the child's parents don't like it, but that doesn't mean she's no longer looking out for them.
But despite all her reservations, underneath them is a woman who has learned to be strong. She has a way with words, even if she won't acknowledge it. She has a quick mind and a confidence that means she is capable of stepping up to fill the boots of authority if needed, but she neither tries to nor wants to. She much prefers to stay a step back, not quite manipulating, but pulling the strings necessary to ensuring success over failure, and the happiness of those around her.
I hear you're asking all around
If I am anywhere to be found
I have grown too strong
To ever fall back in your arms
If I am anywhere to be found
I have grown too strong
To ever fall back in your arms
History: Sabriel's father was a guard, her mother a Healer. She and her siblings grew up in Half-Circle Sea Hold, though their house was not near the port, but further inland. Even so, Sabriel loves the sea, being by the sea, still to this day, but gets horribly sea-sick if she's ever on a boat. She was the second child, and has an older brother and 2 much younger siblings, whom she was often left to care for if parents were called away.
When she turned 12 Sabriel went away to the Healer Hall, to follow her mother's craft, but after lasting a turn she left on the advice of her tutor, saying that she was unsuited to the craft. THis wasn't wholly untrue. While she was enthusiastic about learning the ins and outs of people and healing, she had a rather strange outlook on it that many of the other healers found a little unsettling, particularly regarding the death of patients. Normally after witnessing their first death an apprentice would be affected in some way, from tears to breakdown. But Sabriel wasn't. Add to that the fact that CPR had an unusually high success rate when Sabriel was around, conducting it or not, she was considered quite strange, even by her classmates. eventually they asked her to leave, in the politest terms possible. She did pick up a sound knowledge of first aid, however.
Sabrieldidn;t hang around jobless for long. Shortly afterward she joined the nearby Harper Hall, having been enchanted with the music she heard around the hall and hold, which she considered far more beautiful than the sea shanties which predominated at Half-Circle. She launched herself back into studies, and though she didn't have a particularly good singing voice, she developed a particular talent for the flute. She picked up basic guitar too, as all harpers are required to learn, but she never held much love for the instrument. She was also very intrigued with the other things taught by the Harper Hall, skills such as reading people, sorting disputes, just watching to make sure everything was ok and edging things away from disaster. This included manipulation, though she was neither particularly good at this field nor keen on carrying it out.
She eventually walked her tables, earning the title of Journeywoman Harper, and headed home. She met up again with her childhood best friend and holiday sweetheart and, unsurprisingly, they fell in love. It wasn't an easy relationship, however, as Rolen was often away fishing, sometimes for weeks at a time. They married when Sabriel 20 turns old, both looking forward to their first child.
But the child never came. The pair tried for three years, Rolen becoming more and more frustrated with Sabriel, Sabriel becoming more and more heartbroken with each month's failure and Rolen's growing temper on the subject. Eventually, through much emotional turmoil, they divorced.
Sabriel became rather depressed. Not to the point of anything drastic, but she was hardly recognisable as the lively child and bubbly teen she had been. Her parents could see this, but didn't know quite what to do to help. They tried to distract her with music, encouraging her to play for them, and her father started teaching her to use the bow and arrow, and eventually the sword as an activity/distraction. Although she, rather surprisingly, took up arms enthusiastically, she still suffered from bouts of melancholy. In a last ditch effort, they used their savings (and dipped into Sabriel's own, which had been much neglected) to buy Sabriel a feline to care for. The kitten was weak and very small, the runt of the litter and the only one that they could afford. But when Sabriel received this gift, the expense was well worth it. She poured all her lost love and affection into the kitten, caring for it much as she would have a child, for the first turn until she could feel sure that it would survive it was never very far from her presence. Mogget, as she named him, never grew very big, but Sabriel always says that this is a good thing. 'Pocket sized' she calls him, though she never goes as far as to actually pocket the feline, who rather seemed to prefer to stay draped around her shoulders.
But Rolen eventually returned, full of apologies and resentment of his actions, asking to have her back. This tore Sabriel. On one hand, some part of her still loved Rolen, but on the other she did not want to go through the pain again, always to feel like she'd failed to give him the child they so desperately wanted. But eventually her head won out over her heart, and she turned Rolen down. The decision seemed o change her, subtly, her resolve hardening, her previous confidence slowly began returning.
But Rolen was having none of it. He returned, with the same gilded words, and again, and again. Each time Sabriel turned him down. Soon Sabriel could take no more. She wanted, needed to get away, far away from Rolen. Southern would be just about far enough. She began asking for a placing, searching for somewhere to tae her on. But when she could find no placings for a young inexperienced Journeywomen Harper, she was forced to turn to her backup plan, and that was how she ended up at Warden's Weyr as a guard. Even if she eventually did take on a few duties of a Harper.
She hadn't been at the Weyr all that long when the Breakout happened. Perhaps she would have been more shocked if she hadn't been suspecting that something was up. Others didn't see it. They didn't know how to. But she could. She could see it in the way the prisoners were acting. The sudden good behavior, the turned heads when guards walked by, the hidden smiled and flashing eyes, knowing eyes. It was there, but she didn't know what it meant, what they planned. When the breakout did happen, she was off duty and... rather distracted by the flight. Somehow she woke up in the wrong side of the barracks, where the male guards lived. She wasn't the only one to wake up and find the prison in turmoil and most of the crazies escaped.
