A'tsu
Name: A'tsu
Age: 38
Gender: Male
Prisoner: No
Craft/Rank:
Appearance:
A'tsu is one intimidating looking dude. Standing 6'5" with broad shoulders and a build that speaks of either heavy physical labor or long hours spent working out, he's a pile of muscles with a head on top. Yet, despite his size, or perhaps because of it, he moves with certain grace, as if he's aware that simply lumbering about willy-nilly might cause some damage.
A'tsu's skin is a dark bronze with a ruddy undertone and it's marred by a number of minor scars. His face is long, with a sharp chin and a rather flat nose. His hair, when he allows it to grow, is a light strawberry blond. But, few know this as he keeps his head cleanly shaved. His eyes are a very light blue, fringed with long, pale lashes.
A'tsu always dresses simply. He usually wears black, plain slacks and tunics cut for work. Like all guards, he carries weapons. But he carries a rather excessive number of them.
Personality:
A'tsu is a rock. Solid. Dependable. Not very fun to talk to. Hurts to be hit with.
Alright. So, he's not just a rock. In truth, A'tsu is a fairly complex individual, but he'd be the last to realize this. A'tsu isn't actually good at realizing things. He's a very literal person. He thinks in straight lines, starting at point A. taking no detours and ending cleanly at point B. Any other sort of thinking tends to confuse them. This may be why he has absolutely no sense of humor. Jokes puzzle him. Sarcasm, he picks up on, but he rarely uses it himself. He doesn't talk much anyway, so asking him to use his one alloted sentence a day for sarcasm is asking a lot. He's not one to laugh, really, unless it's a laugh of genuine happiness instead of humor. And he's not one for genuine happiness. A'tsu isn't stupid, exactly, though he's certainly not sharp. He's just direct. He expects directness from others.
Speaking of directness, A'tsu has a bad habit of solving problems with his fists instead of with his brain. He's not malicious. He's not mean. He's not even quick tempered, in fact, he almost never gets mad. He's just a physical person. His body is his tool of choice instead of his brain. When dealing with someone causing a problem, be it someone harassing K'yne or a rowdy drunk, A'tsu is likely to ask them, firmly, to stop. Once. Then he'll start hitting things. When he thinks his point is made, he'll stop. A'tsu doesn't actually have any desire to hurt anyone, he just doesn't feel bad if he does.
A'tsu's morals don't always match up with the societal version of 'good'. He's no sadist, he takes no pleasure in cruelty, but he doesn't feel much guilt about it either. In A'tsu's world there's really only one 'absolute' good. Loyalty. When he gives his, he gives it completely. He's no 'yesman', he's not afraid to argue with his leader of his choice. He's more the 'trusted general' sort, a second-in-command. He'll argue, but when push comes to shove, he does what he's told. And, if it's to fulfill the obligation of loyalty, he doesn't feel bad about it, regardless of what the task is. Of course, when that loyalty is divided, it tears him up inside, and he's capable of deep depression and endless self recriminations. But that's all under the surface, stuff only K'yne sees, and him, rarely.
In his dealings with others A'tsu is curt, though not precisely impolite. He just likes to use few words as possible. He's highly respectful of authority, and generally obedient, provided the orders given don't come in conflict with his loyalties. His leader is always his 'ultimate authority'. His leader is, in fact, always his everything. A'tsu is an incredibly dependent personality, and he makes those he's loyal to his entire world. They're his one stop shop for affection, friendship, purpose, sex, and anything else he needs. While he doesn't need to be at their side at all times, he needs to know they exist. Left to loose ends, he's useless, unmotivated, depressed, confused, a ship stranded without a sail.
History:
To explain Adetsu one best begin with his father. Kniene, once K'ene was a greenrider, bonded to green Ladeth. When she was lost between, Kniene, like many dragonless men, went a bit insane and considered suicide. It was a decision he might have eventually gone through with if his sister hadn't recently given birth to Adetsu. From playing Uncle, Kniene quickly found himself in the role of father, as the sister impressed and no longer had the time. And yes, Kniene was broken. Yes, he still goes days without speaking. But he was a kind man, and he did his best by Adetsu. The two moved from the Weyr to Ista Hold, where the nearness of dragons wasn't quite so painful.
At Ista, Adetsu quickly showed unusual skill at physical activities. Quiet, respectful, and driven, it wasn't a surprise when the local Guardmaster took him under his wing. For years, he did little but train, having the same focused intensity that his father had taught him. At eighteen, he was chosen to join the Hold Heir's guards.
And so he met Exrin, the Hold Heir. Brilliant, arrogant, restless Exrin. Passionate, desperate, lonely Exrin. Exrin who took one look at Adetsu and decided that his new Guard was exactly what he needed in his world. Maybe he was right. Certainly, their love affair, which began two years after Adetsu started guarding the man, was an intense one. For Adetsu, it was like seeing the world in color for the first time. Exrin was everything Adetsu wasn't, bright and sparkling and fun where Adetsu was quiet, withdrawn and cautious. He devoted himself intensely to this new love. He'd have given the world for Exrin.
For most of five turns, he had everything he could have asked for. He and Exrin kept their affair as quiet as they could. It wasn't ideal. They often fought, and Adetsu was completely at the mercy of Exrin's moods. But he thought himself happy. It was another guard who revealed what was going on to the Lord Holder.
And that, well, that was the end of that. Adetsu was stripped of his rank and sent away from Ista.
He went to the Weyr he'd been born at, hoping to find work as a guard. He found, instead, a role as a candidate. And he found Kaeyne. The two understood each other on a level beyond the intellectual, their friendship instantanious, even instinctual. And at that time, Adetsu needed someone, anyone, to look to as a friend. As a leader. He'd lost his whole world.
At the Hatching, both boys impressed, and Adetsu was suddenly A'tsu, rider of brown Meursinth. And Kaeyne was K'yne, a greenrider.
Through candidacy their friendship intensified. A'tsu realized, with some prodding from Meursinth, that there was more going on than he was ready to admit. But there was. And so, slowly, carefully, inevitably, he found himself in love with K'yne. And, not good at being subtle, he eventually did something about it. The two, already inseparable, grew closer still.
So it was of no surprise to anyone when A'tsu followed K'yne's lead and joined the watch. They did well there, for many turns. But life marches on and now the two find themselves at Warden's Weyr. A new adventure? Perhaps.
