Name: Dusky
Age: 23
Gender: Female
Prisoner: No
Crime: None
Craft/Rank: Some Healer training.
Appearance: Dusky is rather plain looking in the face, but then again most people notice the large wooden whacking stick she carries first. She's somewhat short, but heavy-set. Her face is perpetually smudged with dirt (she has joked that after cleaning herself, all dust within a five meter radius immediately comes to life and attacks her), and typically set in a distrustful glare. Her brown, just slightly reddish hair is kept medium length and tied back during flight. When given the opportunity, she likes to wear green. Lots of green.
So what is distinctive about her? Dusky has extensive stripes tattooed on her arms in ochre. She claims they came from her days as a wild adventurer, but she actually got them to celebrate being Searched. She walks with a noticeable limp due to a large keloid scar on the back of her left ankle which has done a remarkable job in restricting the movement of her foot. It's appearance changes from time to time as it grows and gets cut back. She's used to it though, since she'd had it as long as she can remember.
Personality: Dusky is adventurous. She is constantly getting into strange and unusual circumstances for the fun of it, and if she can make someone scratch their head and go "how did you even get in there?" it's all the better. She will tell grandiose and exaggerated stories of her exploits, some of which are even based on reality. Generally, it's easy to tell when she's lying because she doesn't even bother making them believable. In her opinion, if someone actually believes she rode for twenty miles on a wild feline that breathed fire they don't deserve to get upset when they find out she didn't.
Despite her fondness for telling tall tales, Dusky does not fit in well with people. She harbors a deep distrust for strangers which only changes to a mild distrust when she gets to know them better. Though it takes a long time to do, if someone does befriend her they will find no one more loyal. This has only happened to three people so far: her adopted brother, her adopted mother, and her dragon.
History: Dusky does not talk about the time until she was 9 turns old. She does not answer questions about that time. Suffice to say it was unpleasant, and considering her state when her current family adopted her, it probably involved neglect. When she was nine, she was adopted by a family in High Reaches Hold who immediately went to work trying to rehabilitate her. They partially succeeded, though she still trusts hardly anyone.
At 12 turns, Dusky went to Healer Hall to start training. Right before she left, her adoptive mother took her to the hatching of a firelizard clutch where she Impressed Shade. Shade took an immediate disliking to the woman. At 15 turns, she was Searched as a candidate for Fort Weyr. In the time between then and the Hatching, she went and had her tattoos done. Unfortunately for her, her skin was still healing when the Hatching started, so she Impressed Suzelaloth while her arms were busy being aggravated by the hot sands after he knocked her over.
Dusky was a devoted dragonrider, only rarely visiting her family. She volunteered for the Random Squad because she thought it sounded more interesting than daily Fort Weyr activities.
Name: Shade
Species: Firelizard
Color: Bronze
Appearance: Shade is a very skinny firelizard no matter how much Dusky tries to feed him. His hide is a dark, mottled bronze with a general lightening towards his forelimbs. He usually wears a bright green harness to help him stay on Dusky's shoulders; he was born with hemiparesis of the right side and cannot cling to her well enough to stay on.
Personality: Shade is quiet and lazy. Nothing much startles him and nothing much upsets him, except for a few select people he just doesn't like and will hiss at. Dusky's adoptive mother is one of them.
Name: Suzelaloth
Color: Blue, 0011aa
Age: 8 turns
Appearance: Suzelaloth is the blue of a desert sky just as the sun is setting. His hide is dark and, for the most part, very uncomplicated. From nose-tip to tail-tip he's the same chilly, dark blue, a blue that lends itself to the suggestion of black when the light isn't on him. But he's a creature meant to be lit, and it's the light that brings out the subtle beauty of his hide. There are suggestions there, of patterns, of firework splashes that add depth to his simplicity. But the splashes are all in blues only slightly differing from his primary color, some slightly darker, others slightly lighter. One has to examine him, admire him, see him under the sun, to notice these little details.
He's of average size for a blue, a neat, evenly proportioned little creature. Possessing much natural grace, he's a pleasure to watch in the sky and on the ground alike. He's built for learning all those fancy tricks that dragons don't really need to know. He and His could be real acrobats if they wanted to.
Personality: Unlike Dusky, Suzelaloth is no storyteller. He's not good at those quick little lies, those clever turns of phrase and dramatic exaggerations. But he is, in his own way, a showman. Oh yes. Suzelaloth loves attention. For himself, of course, but even more so, for Dusky. Think of him as a spotlight, drawing the attention of the crowd to the one weaving little nets of words. Suzelaloth is a natural at drawing attention. He's graceful, with a love of learning the little tricks of flight that give him little flare. Suzelaloth will want to learn to fly upside down. Backwards. Anything that might get people talking about him and his. He's not a gossip himself, not much of a talker at all, but man, does he like to be the subject of the chatter of others.
Needless to say, Suzelaloth is Dusky's biggest fan. If he's a natural at drawing attention to the two of them, it's only because he believes that his deserves the attention. He doesn't really understand her distrust of people, he's an easygoing dragon who tends to assume the best of others. And if he'd rather dance the winds than talk, he loves being surrounded by the conversation of others. Where Dusky might like to keep space between herself and strangers, Suzelaloth will be the first to invite a newly arrived dragon over. He's not much better with newly arrived humans, eager to get a close look at them and show off one of his little tricks. See, Suzelaloth loves Dusky's stories, but he also loves stories in and of themselves. He loves hearing about faraway places, of adventures at foreign Weyrs or deep within the Southern jungles.
If Dusky has any plans of leading a squad of her own one day, she's got her work cut out for her. Suzelaloth is a show-off and a fancy flyer. He's not a plodding, day in, day out, sort of creature. Drills bore him, patrols even more so. He'll be the dragon in the squad who keeps falling back, or pulling out of formation entirely to show off some new bit of aerial trickery. He's fearless, though, in air and on the ground. So, while he may be useless in day to day patrols, he'll not hesitate when it comes to taking down a dangerous wild feline or swooping down to grab an escaping human before they can reach the treeline.
