Thread was gone, AIVAS had been successful. With nothing more to do, he shut himself down never to reawaken. The world was in a spin, for decades, it prospered, Dragons and Riders were heroes, many Weyrs sprung up, technology advanced, and a substitute for metal was found. Artificial materials made from plants became as strong as metal, and as attractive aswell.
Healers began to experiment with artificial limbs, made from a mixture of wood and substitute metal. Legs were easiest, then came arms. Though the machines didn't look like their intended replacement, they were just as useful. But soon people began to experiment on their own, eager to become one of the metal/human wonders. Eventually, the technology became exclusive to one Weyr, Silent Weyr, and gradually, the tensions between the Holders and Dragons grew.
Two thousand years later, and even the politics behind dragons were disintegrating. Though the ranking system was still the same, an experiment on a Queen Dragon created mutated dragons of odd colours. A queen egg brought to Pern the first dragon besides a Gold with the ability to clutch. She was Pern's first Alexandrite dragon, and certainly the most beautiful thing to hatch since the First Gold.
Immediately more experimentations were done on the Gold Dragons, but a similar effect was not achieved. Instead, the Gold Dragons gre ill and began to die out, unable to clutch. Dragonriders began blaming each other and headed off into their seperate Weyrs. Silent Weyr housed the Alexandrite Dragon and the mechanics for changing human limbs, and became the most hated Weyr on Pern.
Eventually the tensions between dragons rose to an unbearable climax, and eventually, Silent Weyr was responsible for the Death of Hidden Weyr's only Gold. Her clutch had been left on the Sands, but with Pern divided into Five different armies, the only Candidates able to Stand for the Clutch were those already there. Holds have been set up within the territories of each Weyr to keep a fresh supply of Candidates, and an agreed area for fighting has been selected.
Those not absorbed in the vengence of the dragons, however, have noticed an old enemy approaching on the horizon. With the Weyr's uncooprative, and Hidden Weyr eager to avenge it's dead Gold, will Pern be ready for the return of Thread?
