Nikkel
(pronounced "Nick L")
Name: Nikkel
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Prisoner: Yes
Crimes: Theft, Fraud, Dust Possession
Craft/Rank: N/A
Appearance: The tall and skinny Nikkel is a fair-skinned young man with a freckled face, brown eyes and unkempt brown hair. He often wears clothing that is ripped, tattered, dirty, or otherwise in disrepair. He does not shave, though he hasn't developed much facial hair yet anyway. He walks with a peculiar sort of posture, slouching and strutting about. He looks a bit cocky, even without trying to be.
Personality: For Nikkel, everything worth buying is worth stealing, and rules are made to be broken. He does whatever he feels he can get away with, without regard to morality or other people's feelings. He picks pockets, cheats at gambling halls, and occasionally moonlights as a con man, though this is what ultimately got him arrested. (He is not an incredibly smooth talker.) He has also intermittently used Dust, though he's avoided addiction thus far. (At least he thinks so.)
He was once something of a braggart, but now that he is in prison with hardened and violent criminals, he has made an effort to mellow out a bit. He is fearfully respectful toward anyone who's sufficiently intimidating, though he won't hesitate to stand up for himself if they turn out to be all bark and no bite. Likewise, once he becomes aware of the 'quiet but deadly' inmates, he will endeavor to stay on their good side. Most importantly, he follows the unwritten rule of prison life: don't trust the guards. If asked to take sides, he would side with his fellow inmates without a second thought. He also refuses to snitch on anyone who has broken the rules.
For young Nikkel, the world was his oyster. Now, in his new environment, he is a bit apprehensive, but he is trying to make the best of it.
History: Born to a poor family in a small Hold, young Nikkel didn't have much to look forward to. He trained at several crafthalls and tried to learn their trade, but he was too unskilled, impatient and unruly to find success. Returning home, he began picking pockets and spinning tales about being a starving, abandoned youth. It worked, for a time. He then set his sights on gamblers and investors, using lies and sleight-of-hand to part them from their money. This seemed to be the only thing he was good at, and he certainly enjoyed it; it was profitable and made him feel good, and he was too self-absorbed to care what anyone else thought.
Eventually, of course, he got caught. He was arrested while attempting to con a rich couple out of their estate. He had almost closed the deal, too... he was 16 Turns old at the time, and he has been in Warden's Weyr for a little over a Turn now. During his time here, he has shown signs of reform, though perhaps that's just because most inmates aren't gullible enough to fall for his typical tricks. Whatever the reason, he has cleaned up his act, at least slightly. Now he has applied to become a Candidate; he hopes that Impressing a dragon will help him earn social status.
Name: Flake
Species: Firelizard
Color: Blue
Appearance: This blue will always be lean, almost too much so. He looks fragile, even sickly. No amount of feeding seems to add much weight, he will always be frail. His eyes seem unusually large and while they whirl in the same colors as others of their kind, they seem a darker hue. In color, he's pale, a chilling icy blue. His wingsails are near white, with dark spars adding a touch of drama.
Personality: Decision is for other firelizards. While they jet off on chosen missions, this blue hesitates. Considers. Changes his mind. He appears haunted by something, some sense that it'll all go bad if he does the wrong thing. He'll rush off on some errand, then hurry back, begging reassurance from his owner. He's affectionate and taciturn by turns, either desperately seeking pets or hissing when they're offered. And what sets off those moods? No one knows.
He'll learn to do tricks and errands and he'll learn quickly. But sometimes he'll simply not do them. Or not complete them. With other firelizards, he's friendly but again, only when he's in the mood. When he's not, it's best they keep their distance. He's not above attacking when he loses his temper.
