At one point of the wher complex, the roof is remarkably low. Low enough for a gold wher to easily leap on top of it with a bit of a boost, as one certain golden wher had done. She'd carried her handler on her back, and now the pair rested on top of the building. It was early, too early for most handlers to be out and patrolling and too early for many of the riders to have gone to sleep. Just now was the wherhandler quarters coming to life, beginning to break up into squads and go about their daily chores and patrols. It was almost as if it was an entirely separate world from the rest of the 'weyr' and prison, something disconnected from the lives of the riders.
Z was sitting on the building, a wineskin beside him and his knees pulled up. He rested his arms lazily on his knees, leaning his head against Zalmask's muscular shoulder as the queen wher laid down. They were not yet ready to go on patrol, and it would be more then a hour until they actually started to patrol. It'd be nice to have a bit of wine in him- no one would notice and it'd make him feel better.
"You know, Zalmask, she never got a chance to see the stars." He grunted to the gold, who watched him with a strange detachment. Zalmask was an empathic creature when it came to her handler, yes, but she was one that was emotionally strong. Z had been mourning for what was, to her, a long time... and she lacked the ability to properly comfort him. She knew that her presence was all he really needed, however. "She died inside. What kind of animal dies inside? It's not fair. Baby whers are supposed to... run around and shit. Be babies."
"I've lost enough, you know? I don't know what to do. I've gotta smile and act stupid and be 'myself', I gotta act competent and like i'm not about to snap and kill everything around me." He tossed the wineskin with a low curse, turning to look at Zalmask. "But you know what I feel like Zalmask? Like i'm going to kill that bitch and her whers any second, like i'm going to rip cute widdle Bellask in half and feed you her. Like i'm going to break down and ask Warden to take me between. Instead i'm teaching the very one that killed my Zalsk."
"And why am I talking out loud?" Z growled, reclining and staring at the stars. "I miss the red star." He said suddenly, earning a startled glance from Zalmask. "What? Things were better when thread was around, I bet."
