In the 500 turns since thread last fell dragons went from mighty protectors to little more than beasts of burden. Without threadfall to hinder farming practices dragons were easily supported by massive herds. It didn't hurt that clutch sizes shrank. Dragons earned their keep and life was good.
Then the rains stopped
Drought took hold of the lands. Rain, when it did fall, fell in torrents that raged through the parched lands, stripping the soil and killing indiscriminately. Only the Southern continent was spared the weather problems. The South had never been formerly settled though, and was still a tangle of tropical jungles.
As famine followed on the footsteps of drought, humans and dragons alike succumbed to hunger. Tempers flared as food sources dwindled, and the unthinkable happened. Benden's senior queen, having just put a clutch on the sands, attacked the weyr's junior queen. The larger gold drove the younger from the weyr. The Senior queen knew there wasn't enough food to support all the weyrlings, and she would not let another queen's children threaten the survival of her clutch.
So the exodus began.
75 turns later, the north has recovered, but deep in the southern continent life developed in a very different manner. The land couldn't support large Weyrs and the holds that supported them. The jungle soil made for poor farmland. Instead the dragonriders splintered into small families. Clawing out patches of land for themselves, living on what they could hunt and gather. The Wings spread and grew, each one developing their own unique culture. Down here dragon eggs are a commodity, and candidates can be traded for a good cask of Benden red.
