Annette
Name: Annette
Age: Thirty-four
Gender: Female
Prisoner: No
Crime:
Craft/Rank: Wherhandler
Appearance: Annette is the sort of woman who gets described as 'handsome' instead of pretty. She's got square features with a strong chin and narrow brown eyes. She keeps her hair short, usually under an inch in length and what little there is of it is very, very black. Her skin is on the darker end of the spectrum, a reddish sort of brown.
With no figure to speak of Annette's form instead speaks of strength. It's not that she's broad exactly, it's just to look at her is to see the muscles in her lean arms and long, athletic legs. She's tall too, an inch or so under six feet. She has a way of holding herself that's almost threatening, but is mostly utterly fearless. This is a woman who's faced dangers and bested them.
Personality:
Curt, abrupt, and honest, Annette isn't an easy person to know. It's not that she dislikes people, indeed she quite likes company. She just doesn't know how to do people. The woman doesn't lie, and prefers to use as few words as she can get away with. She simply doesn't see the point in babbling on nonsensically when one can make their point and step aside for the next person who needs to speak. She has, unsurprisingly, few friends, and this bothers her. She's prone to depression when left by herself, and so seeks crowds, where she can have 'company' without driving anyone off by accident.
Those who know Annette best will argue she does have her charms. She's a hard worker, for one. Anything she puts her mind to, gets done, even if she has to work herself to exhaustion to do it. This can be a problem sometimes, as she doesn't always know when to stop. She's loyal to those few friends she makes, maybe because she's loyal by nature, maybe because she's desperate to hold on to those few she has. And while she's about as sympathetic as a brick wall, she is a problem solver who will do her best to help a friend in need, even if she doesn't make a very good shoulder to cry on.
Among the prisoners, Annette is neither cruel nor kind. They're a job, like anything else, and she treats them with the same brusk civility that she shows the rest of the world. She's got no patience for rule breakers and isn't afraid to get into a frey and bash heads together when the situation demands it. A hard woman to intimidate, she'll look even the hardest killers in the eye without flinching. Perhaps not wise, that. But, with Annesk at her side, she seems to believe she's above harm.
History:
Annesk hatched when Annette was fourteen-turns-old, and as far as she's concerned, her life before that isn't worth mentioning. She was born at a small hold in the south. She had a mother, a father. Some older siblings. They were fine, if simple people.
When she was twelve, she was searched to Southern Weyr, where dragon eggs were hardening. She didn't impress, but she stayed on at the Weyr. A couple turns latter, a different, and Annette would say better, opportunity opened up. A wher clutch. She'd been fascinated by them since she'd seen them making their night rounds of the Weyr. Dragons were somehow ethereal. Whers were real. The clutchmother accepted her, and she bonded to a lovely pale brown. Annesk.
Life began. Annette with Annesk was a happier person, if no better socially. She did well at Southern, even making a few friends. Life became a routine, and a good one. She grew up, grew to knew the other handlers, became part of a community, even if not the most bubbly part. The other wher handlers accepted her, she was a hard worker, she treated her wher well, and she learned quickly enough. At twenty, a brief affair with a dragonrider resulted in a daughter. And while Annesk was Annette's first interest, she always meant the daughter to be the second.
It didn't work out that way. Babies were not interesting the way whers were, lacked even that rudimentary sense of intelligence and closeness. They cried, screamed, and did not give back. Annette didn't know how to deal with it, and the child, like many Weyr children, grew up in the creche. She visited the little girl, watched her grow, but never particularly understood her, or knew what to do with her. There was no real connection between them, no bond. The older the girl got, the more Annette realized that they had little in common, and the less often she visited.
Unsurprisingly, she had no further children, though she felt more than a little guilt for not being successful with the one she had birthed. She avoided relationships, whether brief or lasting, contenting herself with her work and her care for her wher. That worked until Annette turned thirty-two and met Junelle, a charming blue-handler with a laugh like the whole world dancing. And Annette, well, she fell hard and fast like she'd never fallen. It became an obsession, the woman's brief little smiles, her low, breathy voice.
Her everything.
Her completely inflexible interest in men and men alone. Annette tried. Of course she did, but she might as well have tried to wear down a mountain with a feather. Junelle wasn't interested in her, was not even particularly interested in offering friendship. Annette found herself waiting in hallways where she knew the woman would pass by, found herself not sleeping for days. Forgetting to eat. Finally, Annesk took it upon himself to tell the Wherleader's wher. And the Wherleader spoke to Annette.
Annette had never been reprimanded. And perhaps she wasn't, even then. But it felt like one. She put in for a transfer to Warden's Weyr, needing to get away from Junelle, from the daughter who she now saw walking the halls, an echo of herself, from everything. The community she'd loved was lost to her, but she hoped, with time, to find a new one.
Other stuff: None
Annesk
Name: Annesk
Color: Brown
Age:20
Appearance: Annesk is small for a brown, a lean beast, built for speed. His hide is a pale, soft, brown, cream, and slightly darker around his feet. He's got a slightly longer neck than is common for his species, but is otherwise fairly ordinary.
Personality: Annesk likes to talk. He talks to his handler. He talks to other whers. He talks to dragons when he gets the chance. Everyone is Annesk's friend and Annesk is friends with everyone. Enthusiastic and curious, he's more playful than most, romping ahead of Annette and then racing back while they do their rounds. His enthusiasm can be a bit dangerous, as he often forgets his own size and weight, nudging people in a way that's meant to be friendly but instead lands them on their rumps. Unlike his handler, he lacks a strong work ethic, and it takes all Annette's control to keep him focused during guard duty.
This isn't to say he can't be aggressive, when he feels Annette is threatened, Annesk becomes quite dangerous, and his definition of a 'threat' can be uncomfortably broad. He's given to acting first and waiting for permission later, which means, by the time Annette's called him back, he's already knocked the offender down and is standing on their chest. Luckily, that aggressive edge is somewhat tempered by his good nature, and he's not yet attempted to do real damage to any of the prisoners he's knocked over.
Name Ask
Color Blue
Sin YOU DARE SUGGEST ASK IS SIN? ASK IS VIRTUE.
Hex Code 4900A7
Desc Like Lucisk, Ask is a fragile creature. He is thin and almost ethereal, the direct opposite of his rival in appearance. His wings are broad and thin, placing him as one of the few whers that can glide. He won't be able to fly, but gliding? He's got that down. His hide earned a bit of a jerk because of the strange dragon colors- it's nearly purple. Thankfully, this little guy is a blue through and through. He's only the size of a small green, but there's a strange charisma about this male that makes him seem so much larger. He is deformed like his fellow 'small eggs', but only someone who knew him would ever know it. His hide is more like a dragons then a whers- it isn't nearly as tough and has to be oiled regularly to keep from cracking. Aside from this, he has an extra toe on each paw.
Personality
When Ask talks, people shut up and listen. His mindvoice has charisma, and he knows how to turn people to his side. It's the biggest talent of this wher, but you won't see him use it often. He believes in communicating through actions, and his overly serious nature means that it isn't often he breaks his silence to chat. He's an formal beast at best, only cracking his icy shell when faced with Annesk and Annette. The only one Ask will ever lower himself to play with is Annesk... when the brown asks, the blue will sigh and play a game with him. He's got a soft spot for the big, silly oaf.
He will never lie, he will never betray someone. Honor, loyalty, morals. These are what define the way he acts, and this chivalrous little male will never break from his code of behavior. Annette will be the one to teach him this code, and he'll adhere to it as if it was the bible itself. He will never deviate from it, and if forced to, will suffer a break down for going against his morals. It's not suggested you make him do this.
Depsite his serious behavior, he has a massive soft side. One who might watch will find him bringing food to the more pathetic prisoners, protecting kittens, and helping little girls find their pets. He will be one of the first to leap to Lucisk's defense, the first to tell Ira to leave Bask alone, the first to tell Siatask to stop biting prisoners. He doesn't fear anything, and the entire world is his to protect. They're his flock, and he is the shepard. He'll fight all the wolves of the world to keep them safe.
The most interesting part of this wher is his relationship with Siatask. Half of it is loathing, a quarter rivalry... and when they mature, sexual tension. He'll preach that he hates her during most of the time, but when she runs he'll be the one chasing her, no matter how much she hits him for it. He's also a dedicated father like some of his brothers, guarding the eggs just as much as a gold.
Er, he's also pretty OCD. He's a complete neat freak, and he won't tolerate messiness at all. Order is also desired strongly by this wher, and he has no tolerance for those who deviate from tradition and order... unless of course, it is defense of the weak.
Why Me? Annette is a serious woman, one who adheres to work and is as honest as Abe himself. That is what drew him to her, and that's what will make him stay. Ask likes her because she doesn't force affection out of him, and she'll be fine with their relationship appearing merely professional to eyes of outsiders. But she won't mind him cuddling up to her when they're alone. Likewise, Annesk has a part in this. He can draw Ask out of his shell, teach him that not everything has to be serious. He'll appreciate it.
