A’rin
Name: A’rin (Formerly Avarin)
Age: Twenty-nine
Gender: Male
Prisoner: No
Crime: Being too loyal.
Craft/Rank: Squadleader (Former Smithcraft Journeyman)
Appearance: A’rin is the thicker of the brothers, his entire frame muscular and very well put together. Relatively tall, he stands at a full six feet three inches, he only stands a few inches above his younger brother. Broad chest, thin waist, killer abs, and bulging biceps, he is a dream guy for many women physically, probably even some men. However, this is all usually the norm with dragonriders, as they work harder than the average Pernese man. It certainly helps that he had the bulk before Impression thanks to his craft.
Beyond his gorgeous body, A’rin really is pretty average. His hair is a dark brown shade that tends to appear black in low light. His eyes are a relatively dull blue-gray shade, though they are commonly quite intimidating as he takes his role very seriously. Black stubble grows faster than he can shave it, though it adds a more rugged look to him. His lips are relatively thin and his nose has as odd bend in it due to having been broken once in his youth.
He is still quite youthful, his bits are all in the right places and he doesn’t have much in the way of wrinkles. He is sprinkled with the usual amount of scars, given from his lines of work. His hands are extremely calloused and are very strong thanks to his previous craft, though his left thumb is a bit smashed from a bad swing that left half his thumbnail on that hand blackened, never seeming to come back to a healthy pink shade.
Personality: A’rin is a hard worker, plain and simple. He wants to please everyone, and loves to do as he’s told. He often goes above and beyond what he is called to do, which is why he was given the rank of squadleader. There are three things that Av just lives for: Takoth, working, and Basiril. He likes excelling and enjoys getting things done. He doesn’t do it to please anyone but himself, and doesn’t take too kindly to the negativity that comes from some people who feel that he is kissing butt or giving them a bad name for working too hard.
A’rin wants to make a lot of friends throughout his life. While his brother seems to be working in his own life, he wants to be sure to find people to give them conversation beyond their family. He likes people in general, and thinks that even the worst non-violent prisoners deserve He believes that people make mistakes or were even just in a bad circumstance, and that once they serve their time they will have learned their lesson. Violent criminals, however, are less liked by him. Av takes a strong stance against violence, and the individuals who cause troubles under his watch are quickly dealt with.
When not on the job, Av is a very sweet individual. He is kind and friendly, and doesn’t mind going out of his way to help others, even after he’s had a hard day’s work. Life may be pretty grueling as a squadleader for Warden’s Weyr, but Av has one of those personalities that will never allow life to get him down. It’s another one of those sickening feats about him that make his fellow rider rather irritated to be stuck with him. However, he does his best to be who his squadmembers need him to be and will try to make working as enjoyable for them as it is for him.
When it comes to relationships, well, A’rin is at quite a loss. He sometimes envisions having a family, but doesn’t usually envision a wife at his side. He doesn’t think of men either, simply of children. Av loves kids and knows that some are in horrible situations out there, especially with Dust destroying as many lives as it was. Besides, with his single experience of a woman in a relationship, he’s simply not sure if he wants to try it again.
History: Avarin was the first born son of a hard working beastcraft family. Children were the goal to help with the small farm, his mother attempting to keep them all fed with her knowledge of farming learned from her own family before she broke off the tradition and became a beastcrafter. The next child, a daughter died at a young age due to illness, leaving a large gap between Av and the next surviving child, Basiril, who was born when Avarin was already four turns old. Even at this young age, Av wanted to help! He wanted to do things, to be big and strong like his father, and to take his place with the adults, though he was far from it at this time.
After his brother came three other sisters, and by the time he was eight, Av was allowed to help with the beasts his father bred. Fine runners the lot of them, and Av worked hard to please his parents. He was busy helping his father, but still noticed how his younger brother acted, throwing things about and screaming. Av tried to take more time to be with the boy, seeing that his mother had grown frustrated with him and tended to give her attention to the three girls, all younger than Bas.
Over time, Av found a true friend in Bas, and vice versa. Still, he was working hard to help his father, and often took Bas with him as Bas was never given his own chores. They talked and played, and he realized that Bas looked up to him, and was even the one that Bas confided in with the knowledge that he didn’t like the other members of the family. At first Avarin thought that that was just one of those silly things that kids said, but in time he realized the truth behind those words.
When he turned twelve, he did the natural thing and took up to a craft, rather than hanging around his family. In all honesty, his thought process was that his father needed a smith around, and learning the craft himself was the best way to help the man. He cried after he left, missing his family, but missing Bas the most. Especially with the sight of his brother bawling his eyes out and throwing a fit when he had to leave.
He worked hard at his craft and excelled. He tried to please everyone at once and somehow managed to do that almost all of the time. He even had a quick romance with a girl while he was there, but it didn’t last. She was fickle and decided he was too attentive and tried too hard. Av really couldn’t grasp that concept, so instead he decided that women were strange beings, much like his mother and sisters who often kept to themselves instead of helping him and his father.
Well into his eighteenth turn, Avarin walked the tables to become a Journeyman Smith. The first thing he did was return home to tell his family the good news. His mother gushed, his father was proud, and several younger siblings he barely remembered all looked at him strangely. The eldest of the girls, having remained with her family though she was old enough to train in a craft officially, seemed to hate him for returning. It didn’t take him long to understand why. It seemed that, during his absence, all his parents could talk about was their eldest son and how wonderful he was. Hoping for a change of conversation he asked about Bas and was surprised when not a single one could say anything other than he had apprenticed to the Woodcraft.
For some reason, his parents’ lack of affection for his beloved brother was quite frustrating to Av. After an argument with his father, the first argument Av was ever in, he left his family to go to the Woodcraft Hall and visit his brother. The moment Bas saw him, the boy jumped up and ran to him, throwing his arms around him in a great hug. Immediately after, Bas was filling him in on happenings and asking about everything that happened to him. Av’s heart melted at the good nature and pure love of his brother, and decided to stay with him.
When Bas reached the rank of Journeyman, the pair of them decided that they wanted to go somewhere where their family would not follow. So they went to the Weyr, hoping to find work. As they entered the world away from Home and Hall, they finally realized how rampant Dust had become. Av had heard of it, but he was far too worried about pleasing people to have tried the drug, though he had caught his brother trying Dust a few times. Every time he cared for his brother and destroyed any extra amount that the younger boy had laying around. He had the bright idea of getting them both fire lizards to keep Bas’s mind from Dust, to keep his brother clean and free of addiction. Their blue and green fire lizards, Karagan and Fel, were born.
Together they ‘stood’ for the hatchings that happened of the Weyr, though they didn’t expect to Impress. Avarin was shocked when a brown approached him and spoke to him, entering his mind and calling him A’rin. Thrilled beyond anything, for a moment, Av didn’t think how this would affect his brother, and immediately spent his time taking care of Takoth, his new dragon. After a few weeks, he tried to see more of Bas, but never really managed to get free time often enough to truly visit with his brother.
Upon graduating, A’rin joined the Dragon Watch, ready for a chance to really do something with his life. He kept Bas in his life more at this point, but also kept an eye on the younger man, taking one girl who had been hanging around him into custody as she was quite obviously under the influence of Dust. With Bas’s previous attempts with the drug, Av really didn’t want an addict anywhere near him, influencing him to give the thing another try.
When Warden’s Weyr was being created, Av was one of the first to be transferred there. He could only assume the reasoning behind it as the physical issues of his dragon, as Takoth was blessed with adorable little legs that were just not up to par with the longer legs of other dragons. Some individuals had even gone to say that Takoth’s legs were too small for even the smallest green, which had upset Av, though he did nothing about it. Later that rider was found to be in possession of a great deal of Dust, so A’rin shrugged it off as something someone under the influence had said.
When Av told Bas about his transfer, his younger brother isntatntly stated that he wanted to go also. He felt that Warden’s would be a better place for him, would have more use for him, and give him more duties that he could not find at the Weyr. A’rin was happy to have his brother join him in the move, by now it would simply be too difficult to be without his brother. Though he would soon learn, as he was assigned the position of Squadleader he was given a massive amount of duties. His work schedule was so hectic and demanding that he spent very little time with Bas anymore.
He knew that Bas was trying to Impress himself, but was unable to watch the hatching of the eggs that were given to Warden’s. He would have been upset if he had missed his brother’s Impression, but fortunately, or unfortunately depending on how you looked at it, Bas wasn’t paired with a dragonet from that ‘clutch’. Av intends to try to get time off to watch the next one, though he knows that his only chance is really if it’s one of his off days that the strange queen’s clutch just decides to hatch. He continues to hope that his brother gets everything he hopes for and Impresses.
Other stuff: Takoth intended to join in Semith’s run, but after a few awkward bounds that only made a few onlookers laugh at him, he gave up and took a nap instead.
Pets
Name: Karagan (“Gan”)
Species: Firelizard
Color: Blue
Appearance: Gan is a pretty shade of blue, paler and brighter than the shade referred to as generic blue. In all honesty, he is a beautiful little beast, or perhaps once was. He is shaped properly, proportioned right, and is a bit on the large side for a blue fire lizard. Alas, from the activities he has participated in, his hide is covered in scars, darker marks across his hide, one foreclaw that doesn’t straighten properly anymore, and a tail that obviously is missing the left tip of the fork that it once had.
Personality: Gan has an adoration for Fel, possibly a transfer of A’rin’s love for his brother (in a purely fraternal sort of way). He takes all of her antics in stride and tries to cuddle her, even though this is the reason he is so scarred. Gan is a lover, not a fighter, and he will cuddle up with anyone without a second care, whether or not they are his A’rin. He simply adores affection, and should anyone show him any kindness, he will trill happily. Much like a feline purrs, if he is stroked, petted, or oiled he tends to hum softly to himself.
Takoth
Name: Takoth
Color: Brown
Age: Five turns
Appearance: Takoth might have been the perfect example of a brown dragon. He is larger than a bronze in that he is far thicker, far more muscular. His wings are great and powerful, made for flying with great stamina and holding heavy loads. His hide is an ashy brown shade, somewhat grayer than a perfect brown. The problem lies securely in the dragon’s limbs. While other dragons have long, graceful limbs, Takoth’s are short and stubby. They are stocky, like small tree trunks, and powerful for carrying, but running and hopping are simply out of his capabilities. When he moves quickly on the ground, his huge feet have to move pretty fast for their shortness, and he usually can’t keep up with other dragons who have prettier, more elegant legs. When he flat out runs he appears to bound up and down with little hop-steps, quite a sight to see. However, for all his shortcomings on the ground, Takoth is marvelous in the sky.
Personality: Takoth is a very happy-go-lucky sort of dragon. He is always meaning well and tends to be a bit dimwitted when it comes to individuals being mean to him. He believes that everything is good and everyone means well. He even feels that all of the prisoners are just confused and will learn to be better once they realize how silly they are being. Very little can make Takoth upset, and he enjoys life in whatever way he lives it. Hard labor is a fun challenge, relaxation is a lovely surprise, even having to do extra work is something that he enjoys, simply because there is nothing he has yet experienced that he doesn’t look at glass-half-full.
