“If you’d like to listen to the poem I’ll read,
Spun out of ancient stories, set down by honest men
With bold words
And faithful pens.”

The Freeze came. It came like a wolf in the night—it was without warning and moved at voracious speeds that were beyond the Pernese people’s understanding. Let it be known that they were a strong people, doing their best to fight against the relentless cold.
And so, the people of Pern dipped into a five-hundred turn stretch of frigid, destructive winter.
During The Great Freeze, Dragonriders took Holders into the Weyrs, due to quickly dwindling supplies of food. Dragonriders were tasked with expeditions out into the deadly cold, no matter the conditions, in order to find what food they could. On these expeditions, many Dragonriders became lost Between, due to the lack of landmarks, or perished from hypothermia. During The Great Freeze, Thread did not fall, and so the far and between clutches of Queens dwindled to smaller sizes. In the 45th turn of the Great Freeze, the last Dragonrider, T'lore, and his Bronze Tryth, died while on an expedition to find food. Their bodies were never found.
After The Great Freeze finally came to an end, and Rukbat shone upon melting snow and ice, the decision was made to destroy A.I.V.A.S, due to its destructive effect. However, before this was to be done, it was decided that they would attempt to breed Dragons once again from the surviving race of Firelizards, and to recreate the heroic Dragonriders.
When one natural disaster ended, another began—with the passing of the Great Freeze, Thread made its reappearance. Gray rain fell from the skies, devouring all it touched. It soon became called Thread and it was the deadliest tapestry ever beheld by man. But the planet produced salvation. On jeweled wings of Ice and Silver, the settlers were saved, and an age of hope struck fire into the hearts of the young. Flown by Silver strength, those Ices laid, producing many fine, strong beasts of Snow, Slate, and Sapphire. As the dragons multiplied, so did the population of dragonmen. Though not as rapidly as they would have liked to fend against the Thread.
Pern's remaining population moved from the ruins of the old Weyrs and into a single Weyr, formerly known as Fort. The Weyr was renamed Wyntryl Weyr, in honor of the harsh winter the people had survived, and to remind them of the sacrifice of the Dragonriders.
We all have heard this story; we all know it to be true… Our brave dragonmen took to the sky without a selfish thought to defend us down below from the silvery monster. Draconas and their riders would also do their part during the winter months to protect the civilians from the ever-growing threat of the bold canines and felines.
And so Wyntryl lives on...
