The Sands of time do not always flow smoothly...
What if they had taken a different path? If Fax had killed F'lar and Lessa and declared war on the dragonmen of Pern? If the Holds had risen up and dragons had keened into the night? If Thread fell and no one fought...
What would have happened to Pern?
Nova Weyr is the answer. Less than a Turn away from the beginning of the 10th Pass and all is not tranquil in the only Weyr on Pern. Having fled to the Southern continent some 250 Turns ago to escape the war in the north, they struggle to maintain the race of dragonkind. A deadly disease, Cloudlung, has ravaged the South, and though the epidemic seems to have tapered off, people and dragon still die from its ravages.
Within the frozen shadows a group of ragtag survivors from Pern's distant, violent past lie in wait for the perfect opportunity to strike at Nova Weyr. Their target: Wingleader G'rett and his Bronze dragon, Coth. Yet the unknown group's plans go awry when it is discovered G'rett and Coth have been taken by force, victims of a horrific crash-landing during a powerful sand storm that often comes during the turbulent rainy season. The brave men and women of Nova Weyr mount a daring rescue attempt deep into the heart of the South Polar Regions, a forbidden area to all Dragonriders, but the operation comes with a high price: Many people will not make it back alive. G'rett and Coth are rescued, and in their wake the men and women of Nova learn about these strange new Riders. Indeed, it is discovered the new Riders came forward in time from Pern's past, likewise escaping the fall of the Northern Continent. Their leader, K'ain, is now dead, and the surviving group now look to Nova's leadership for direction.
But not is all as it seems. Though difficult to incorporate the two Weyrs into a single unit, already one person is secretly plotting revenge against Nova for the death of K'ain, and this person will take any advantage he or she can get to destroy the Weyr from within, even if it means the death of the Weyrwoman or the new Weyrleader.
Yet there is still a spark of hope for the future of Nova. A rare double Clutching has taken place; indeed, Gold Chandrath, the Senior Queen, and Red Chrysoberyth from K'ain's group have both laid Eggs: nineteen from Chandrath, nine from Chrysoberyth. Twenty-eight Eggs total, and while none of them appear to be a Gold Egg, with the new colors present there is a chance one of them could wind up Hatching a new Silver Queen, the second to be Hatched in a generation. Searchriders and their Dragons are working overtime to find as many Candidates as possible to Stand at the Hatching. Furthermore, more wondrous news has been announced: the legacy of Nova will continue as a baby boon is underway.
