Auctor
Name: Auctor
Age: 44 Turns
Gender: Male
Prisoner: No
Crime: n/a
Craft/Rank: Guardmaster, journeyman carpenter
Appearance: A tall and rather imposing man, Auctor is not the kind of person you’d approach if you wanted to ask directions. He has wide shoulders and quite muscular arms, earned through years of working with wood, though in recent years he’s developed something of a pot belly. He looks no less powerful and intimidating though, now he just looks well fed as well. He has unusually pale skin compared to the rest of the Pernese, and against it his pitch black hair looks striking. He usually wears it at a medium length, brushed back from his face and held in place with a small amount of oil. Naturally he would be going grey at the temples, but he applies dark pigment to hide it. His skin has not yet started to wrinkle very much however, rather it looks a little drawn covering his hollow cheeks. His face has the look of one that was once handsome, with high, wide cheekbones and a sharp jaw. He has a small, thin mouth, a prominent but well-shaped nose with narrow nostrils and wide eyes with irises of an unusual steel grey shade. His eyebrows are dark and low, giving him a rather stern expression. He often has dark stubble over his chin and cheeks, shaving about once a week, and then reluctantly
Personality: Auctor is, on the surface, a stern and unsmiling man who takes everything a little too seriously. He considers his duties as guardmaster to be of utmost important, and oh, he is such a dutiful man. He believes that honesty and integrity are the foundations of a good person, and so if he says he will do something, you can be sure that he will; he will never go back on a promise. Unfortunately, because of this, he doesn’t make many promises. A rather oldschool sort of fellow, he has no problem with giving others a piece of his mind regardless of who they are, if he thinks they’re behaving badly, and overall he is a very bold and outspoken person. He might sometimes overestimate the amount of power his position gives him, certainly he likes to set himself up as chief of law-keeping at the Weyr, and any misdeeds are dealt with quickly and efficiently. His favourite punishments include extra chores and standing for long hours on watch at night, and for this he’s earned a reputation as an overly harsh guard who preaches excessively old fashioned values, though he doesn’t much care about what’s whispered about him. He can also be quite proud, and does not take insults very well, though he’s not so petty as to hold a grudge and is quick to forgive.
But at heart Auctor is a much gentler man than he appears. He’s a family-man, and loves nothing more than to spend time with his wife and two daughters, when they can visit. He also likes to take time out from his busy schedule to practice his carpentry, a sort of stress-relief for him, and his quarters are full of furniture of his own making. He’s a sensible, down-to-earth man who’s not given to romantic notions; indeed he’s more of a realist. He’s also very good at organising and making sure things run smoothly, part of the reason he became guardmaster. He’s quite a compassionate person behind all his scowls, with a strong social conscience; he wants everyone in the Weyr to be as happy as possible, and sees it as his duty to ensure that they are. Politics is another strong point of his; his ability to understand the motives of other people helps him find compromises that please everyone, and his long patience allows him to put up with the creeping pace that getting anything done politically requires. He’s quite a worldly man, someone who’s seen it all and is rarely surprised by anything. No amount of corruptness raises his eyebrow, nor any of the many strange starts of youth, nor even the discgusting crimes of some of the prisoners he guards.
History: Auctor was born at Fort Weyr, though his parents were from Fort Hold and only moved to the Weyr because Auctor’s father, a carpenter, believed he would find more work there. Auctor was the first of four siblings, though sadly the younger two passed away soon after birth. Even so, Auctor and his brother found plenty of playmates amongst the weyrbrats, and their upbringing was a relatively happy one. They did not go to the crèche, as many children of their Weyr did, instead they stayed at home with their housewife mother who taught them to have more traditional values than many in the Weyr. She emphasised the importance in following their father’s footsteps and becoming craftsmen, avoiding dust and excesses of alcohol, and also that they ought to settle down with a wife and family, rather than have casual ‘weyrmates’ as the riders did. Following this teaching, Auctor became an apprentice carpenter as soon as he was old enough, while his brother instead chose to become a smith. Auctor was a quick and dedicated learner when he was young, and under his father’s careful tutelage he did very well. He graduated from training after about five Turns or so, and in the celebration that followed, he met the woman who, just six months later, would become his wife. He was also given two firelizards egg as a gift from his father, which produced his two little greens.
But while Auctor did love his craft, he found that there was always something missing. Carpentry was too predictable he realised, too much the same from day to day, and he needed something else to fill his time. He heard about the new prison-Weyr in the South and jumped at the chance to be a part of this new venture. Taking his wife with him, he travelled to Warden's and volunteered to be a guard, and was accepted. He worked hard, and his strict but fair methods earned him the respect, if not the fondness, of many of the prisoners. His competance meant that he was eventually put in command of small patrols of guards, and the ultimate complement came when the then-guardmaster retired and named him as his successor. Auctor was delighted, and has served in this role ever since, whilst still finding some small amount of time for both his family and his craft. Before they'd even moved to Warden's his wife had given him two daughters upon which he doted, and though they are both now grown, and one is engaged and the other a rider at Fort, he still loves for them to visit.

Pets
Name: Sammy
Species: Firelizard
Color: Green
Appearance: Sammy is a green of moderate length, though she’s probably quite heavy for her colour as she is distinctly plump. She has dainty little legs, a long, graceful tail and such a darling little face, but her middle is slightly… rotund shall we say, and makes her a little awkward in flight. Her hide is nothing spectacular, being a sort of blueish grey-green pretty much all over, though she does have a large splash of vibrant grass-green over her left shoulder.
Personality: Make no mistake, Sammy is a bossy little madam. She likes to be in charge, and so carries herself with all the regal posture of a gold, indeed, she seems to think she is a gold. Really rather dim, she’s so insistent on being the ‘dominant female’ that she will even try to tell queens what to do, and if they should ignore her, she’ll pick a fight despite the obvious issue of size difference. She’s also a very protective and nurturing creature, taking an interest in her eggs that’s unusual in a green; she may not sit and protect them around the clock as a gold might, but she seems to remember where they are, and if she sees someone trying to take them she will make some protest. She’s proved pretty useless in terms of sending messages, being far too head-strong to submit to training, and yet she seems to retain some affection for Auctor, and he for her.
Pets
Name: Sally
Species: Firelizard
Color: Green
Appearance: Sally is a very diminutive little creature, small and delicate-looking with perfect proportions; her belly trim and concave. She has long, graceful wings that allow her to swoop and twist so gracefully that she seems to swim through the air, rather than fly. Her hide is exceptionally dark, a deep myrtle, but on her belly and around her muzzle she has bright spots, the exact same grass green that her clutch-mate Sammy has on her shoulder.
Personality: Sally is a much more obliging, sweet little creature than Sammy, being more your typical green. She’s playful and good-natured, not quite as hyper as many other greens but certainly bouncy and full of life. She’s fairly bright and clever, and Auctor has managed to train her to send messages to people she’s familiar with. She puts up well with being bossed about by Sammy, and indeed seems very fond of the heavier green, but she’s also very clingy with Auctor and doesn’t like to let him out of her sight. She pines and frets if he leaves her in his quarters, and so he usually allows her to trail around after him.
