"Most of us haven't," Shea said, helpfully, but grinning anyway at the statement. Ah, he liked Kaydian, he was cute. He just acted cute.
"Most people shorten the name that they already had by taking a few letters out. Most seem to take the first letter and the last... syllable? of their original name for a shortened name. Like, my whole name was Shealon, so I chose the first bit, the Sh, and the last bit, Lon, and cut out the middle bit. Except mine was a bit more complicated because I took the first two letters instead of one, because S'lon would have sounded weird to me, but that's just me. You can do what you like." He looked again at the way Kaydian had spelled his name. Gently he took the hide and pencil back. "Following that rule, I would say that the most obvious way for you to go would be K'dian," he said, writing that down below 'Kaydian' in the neatest writing he could muster. "Or you could have K'ian, or K'an, K'ay, or even Kay'n if you really wanted. There are lost of possibilities, but you don't have to use even those. You could be M'zuma if you really wanted," he said, giggling.

Kaydian actually laughed at that last suggestion. "M'zuma?" he asked, giggling. "I don't think I'd know who they were talking to when they called me. It would be confusing to everyone." He stared down at the letters. "K'dian sounds... wrong. Like someone's just saying my name wrong." He paused. He wanted to start fresh, in a way. His old life... It had been hard. It hadn't been good and it had landed him in prison. Not that he was complaining. He liked prison and it had given him Empirith. But it wasn't something that he wanted to go back to. He was a dragonrider now. He had to try and prove that the two of them were just as good as any regular coloured dragon with a normal candidate as a rider. "I like K'ian and Kay'n..." He looked at the letters, playing with sounds in his head. "What... What would K'dan look like?" he asked.

"I've never seen anyone with that name, but I'd like to. I'd laugh. You can get some really strange names, like there's a L'ust around here somewhere," he added with another giggle. "But yeah, it takes a while to get used to being called someone else. People hardly even called me Shealon cause I always went by Shea, so when I Impressed it was really weird for me having to have to 'lengthen' my name as it were. I like it anyway, and that's what counts. Most people still call me Shea still.
"K'dan? That's a good one. That would look liiiike... this," he said, quickly adding the name to the bottom of the list. "I like it. Sounds very traditional," he added with a grin.

The newly renamed K'dan grinned. He traced the letters of his new name with his fingertips, as if trying to integrate it. He giggled a bit as Sh'lon told him about the silly names. "L'ust? Really? Is he a greenrider?" He wrinkled his nose. "No, that's mean to say that. Even if people say things like that sometimes about greenriders. They say lots of things that aren't true. Like that pinks are bad and not normal." He sighed.
"Empirith likes traditional names," he murmured. "And we have to prove that we're good, even if he isn't a normal colour and I was a prisonner."

Sh'lon raised his eyebrows at the greenrider comment, the laughed. Oh yeah, he'd heard a good many of the greenrider stigmas, and like most greenriders, had learned to shrug them off and even to laugh back at them. "No, a brownrider, and the least 'lustful' of them I know."
"Hey, don't worry about it. Pinks are just as awesome as greens and as golds. And just because you did some bad things in your life and got caught for them, doesn't make you a bad person, and definitely doesn't make you worth less than any other. Sure there are some bad people in the prison, but there are bad people everywhere. Remember that," he said, giving K'dan a pat on the back for comfort.

The words were supposed to be reassuring, but K'dan tensed. Empirith hissed, insulted. Mine is afraid of bad people, Kitath. Please tell yours not to make him more frightened,[/color]
K'dan shot his dragon a look. He didn't like that the pink was getting that angry. He straightened up the papers on the desk mechanically, then got up to go over to the dragon. He stroked Empirith's nose to settle him. "I know there's bad people everywhere," he murmured. "Prison wasn't different from anything else, but they had people to make the bad people stay away, most of the time. Jessan made them stay away, before she... left."

Sh'lon immediately withdrew his hand and stepped back when Empirith hissed, startled. He jumped again when Kitath's voice boomed into his head. Shea, stop it! You're scaring him. Don't talk about the bad people.
"I- I"m sorry!" Shea spluttered to K'dan, not knowing what else to say. Oh, he hadn't meant to scare the kid, no no!
"Yeah, the guards are good people," he said, trying to be positive again. "And so are the wherhandlers, and the dragonriders, and the warden... overseer, there are lots of good people here!"

K'dan continued stroking his dargon's nose and eyeridges. It was soothing. He noticed Log shooting them all disappointed looks from the bed and giggled. "Log's right. We're sorr, right Empirith? I just... I still get afraid, sometimes," he admitted. "Some of the guards scared me. And some people weren't very nice because I like to have everything nice and neat. And being a Weyrling is kind of like being in prison, but without the scary guards and with Empirith." He smiled at the pink, then back at Sh'lon. He didn't hold a grudge, it wasn't in his nature. And Sh'lon wasn't really scary. He was nice, and he had a nice flitt and Empirith seemed to think that Kitath was polite and nice so she wasn't a scary dragon like some.
"Were you ever in prison?" he asked Sh'lon, curious. He doubted it, since he didn't think that they would have let him be assistant Weyrling Master if he was, but at Warden's, it was still a valid question.

"Oh don't you be sorry, it's my fault, I shouldn't have said it," Sh'lon replied hastily, knitting his fingers together. He was glad that K'dan didn't seem too scared, but he still felt guilty for scaring him in the first place.
"What's wrong with being tidy? I don't know about you, but if I knew where on Pern everything was when I wanted it life would be so much easier." Then stop forgetting where you put everything as soon as it leaves your hand. That's what I keep you for, my dear. She hmphed.
"Me, in prison? Noo. Nah, I was a candidate at Igen for a while, before I transferred here and Impressed Kitath."

"Because I would tidy their things..." he motioned towards his obsessively clean space. "Things not being clean and tidy makes me scared, sometimes. Jessan was helping me. Empirith helps me a lot, with that." He smiled, proud of his dragon. He knew the Weyrling Master's assistant would understand how happy he was to have Empirith, even if he hadn't been saved from prison by his dragon. He always seemed so happy when he spoke about Kitath and his flitt. "I'm too busy to want to tidy all the time, I have to oil him and wash him and oil him again... And Log too. Log always gets so disappointed when I oil Empirith and then don't oil him."
He considered Sh'lon's answer. "How did you become a candidate?" he asked. He didn't know much about how one became a candidate, if one wasn't already in a Weyr, somehow.

"Ah, right," Sh'lon said, understanding. People did get touchy about others touching their stuff. He didn't understand how things being untidy would scare K'dan, though. It seemed just a little odd to him. But it was good that Empirith was helping him. That was what dragons were for, or Kitath at least. K'dan would be in that euphoric state of post-Imperession for a while yet where it seemed that everything the pink did was perfect. He'd had it himself, as had many of his classmates.
He chuckled, "you think you're busy now, just wait until Empirith grows bigger. The oiling will never seem to end, and he's going to get a lot bigger than Kitath." It hadn't helped that Kitath had grown a lot bigger than the other greens in her clutch, even larger than a couple of the blues. It had often left Shea wondering if she'd ever stop growing.
"On of the people in my Weyrling class had a flitt, and she used to sit in the oil pot until she got oiled too. He used to complain about it all the time," he said with a grin. That green flit had certainly known how to get her way.
"Me? I was searched at Keroon BeastHall. I was doing an apprenticeship there. I gave it up because I thought that I'd be able to finish it off after Impression. Then, when I didn't Impress, they offered me a chance to more to a new Weyr, which was here, but I didn't know that at the time so I agreed. And that's how I ended up here." he said, with a shrug. "It's not all that bad."

"He is?" K'dan askwed, blinking. "I... I've never met another pink, before. I mean I think I know how big greens and browns and blues and stuff get, but I don't know anything about pinks except that Empirith is growing fast." He fondly scratched Empirith's eyeridges and the pink made a crooning sound. "Are there other pinks in the Weyr?" he asked quietly. "Are they nice? I heard people say that Empirith couldn't be nice because he isn't normal and I was a prisoner, before."
He smiled a bit at Log. "You were a beastcrafter?" he asked, interested. "Really? What... What was that like?" He was curious about life outside the dust-filled streets and the confines of Warden's. "I've never really seen a herdbeast up close before. Or a runnerbeast. I hadn't even been close to a dragon before Warden's. And not really close until Empirith."
