For Jadore:
Who are you? Where is this? What's that? The Fresh Perspectives egg needs to know these things! Now. It pushed against Jadore's mind, not seeming to want to explore her head in particular, but simply trying to pick through for knowledge of the world around it.
For Kailin:
The Making a Mockery Egg burned with brilliant heat against Kailin skin. And sure, the pain was technically in her mind, not in her hand, but in the end, isn't all pain of the mind? Isn't that where everything is felt? Regardless, touching it hurt. Weren't expecting that, were you?

"There are more bags of soil by the entrance, darling," Jadore told Astor. Not that she expected he'd pay much attention, lost in his own little world as he was. Still, she was rather curious as to whether he could be made to behave...an experiment of sorts? So she drew another breath, while Kailin labored to pack soil around the egg Astor had left behind. "We were rather hoping someone as strong and helpful as you are would make an appearance."
There. Let that swirl around in his mad little mind. If it produced results, wonderful! If not...
Her own stream of thought trailed off. Or rather, it was shoved aside by the presence of another consciousness. Jadore's jaw set as she felt the hatchling hidden inside of the Fresh Perspectives egg make itself known.
If there was one thing she hated, it was being pushed around. No matter that its questions were natural to an untested mind. She could not abide such rudeness.
It took everything she had to maintain a pleasant tone, both inside of her own mind and outside of it. An exertion of will the likes of which she hadn't marshaled since steeling herself to poison her first husband. How frightened she'd been then. And how easy it had seemed, afterwards. Ah, to be a girl again, when the path ahead was clear...
...and she wasn't surrounded by the criminally insane and unambitious.
"Patience, dearest," she murmured to the egg, "I'm not your dam but this is your new home and soon, soon you'll learn everything you could hope to learn."
But not from her. She stood up and stepped back, trailing the empty sack in her hand. Time to fetch another and make the acquaintance of another of these fascinating objects. She couldn't honestly say, even in the privacy of her own mind, that they'd impressed her just yet. No, that typically comes after the hatching, her own voice told her, dry and edged sharp enough to cut.
Oh shut up.
See? This was what living with lunatics had done to her. She was now officially talking to herself. Jadore stifled a sigh as she lifted another sack to her shoulder, then picked her way back around the pool to the remaining eggs. A nod was given to Kailin as she passed the woman by; she couldn't fault that one's work ethic. And she seemed refreshingly non-crazy.
The Golden Starburst Egg received her attention next. As with the others, Jadore knelt beside it and began scooping earth around its base to stabilize and insulate it from a chance breeze. Once it was sufficiently protected, she reached up and flattened her hand against the oddly symmetrical marking. "And what judgments will you pass, mm?"

For Jadore:
Judgement were rather a specialty of the Golden Starburst Egg yet as Jadore touched its surface, it didn't judge. Instead, it let its own acid edged amusement touch the woman's mind, bringing her in to its own little private joke. Those others were pathetic weren't they? Not like it. It wasn't pathetic. Jadore didn't think it was pathetic, did she? Not that it cared. Because it knew it wasn't.

Kailin withdrew her hand from the egg with a sudden shock. "I thought you said this one was shardin' cold!" she exclaimed accusingly, before snatching her bag away from the egg, highly tempted to stick her tongue out at the thing. She didn't want that one to Impress to her at the hatching!
Rankled to the highest degree, she retreated to a smaller egg on the far side of the clutch. She'd liked the first small one and this was near it, hopefully she'd have more luck with the Widow's Veil egg, crouching beside it and gently touching the shell.
"Do you need any more dirt, little one?"

For Kailin:
Aggressive? Widow's Veil Egg? Perish the thought! The dragonet inside is just as hesitant as its sibling was not, mentally shivering at the touch. Kailin, with her gentle touch and words, did not get pushed away - no, the egg brushed a small, hesitant mind against hers, and an echo of being lost, and scared, and confused.

That was a slightly more reassuring response. The River Blue Egg thought he was strange? Astor could certainly live with that. He knew, on some level, that it was true. He was strange in that he was different from those around him and approached the world with a very different angle. In his opinion, this made him better than all the rest of them, but... details, details. At least this little egg wasn't judging him. He could probably win it over.
With perfect timing, Jadore made mention of extra sacks of dirt. 'Strong', he certainly was. 'Helpful' he wasn't quite sure about. He may have given Jadore the wrong impression -- childish, certainly, and very strange, but not stupid. He could manipulate with the best of them, in his own particular way. If she kept on, he'd very likely notice that she was trying to make him into an experiment. And how would he take that? Time would tell.
For now, he nodded to the woman with some semblance of docility, picking up his own sack of dirt. If he wanted to win over the River Blue Egg, a good way to start was probably making it comfortable. It was barely covered as it was, and the coolness of the shell worried him. He packed dirt around it, making sure not to smudge the shell if he could help it. He had a feeling the eggs wouldn't like being manhandled and smeared with mud.
Once done with that egg, his eyes fell on the others. Hm. Some still hadn't been packed with the extra dirt, it looked like. He could work at winning them all over! He knelt down by the Whirlwind Romance Egg and began to fortify its base, fingers brushing the shell with every handful of dirt. He had a child's concentration: the packing had to be perfect, even and secure, and he'd spend as long as he had to to make it so. He had a feeling the egg would appreciate that. Wouldn't anyone appreciate being so well taken care of?
"I hope you're not as cold as the others," he said conversationally. "We need at least some of you to hatch."

Kailin was annoyed when the kid ignored her outburst, snorting in contempt to show her irritation. Hey if she said something to you in anger you should sharding well be listening! Hmph!
She turned her attention to the egg under her hand then, the little thing seeming to shiver away from her touch. Then, after a confused a d disappointed second, she felt it reach out tentatively, fear still evident in its touch. Oh you poor little thing! she wanted to say, stroking it in what she hoped was a reassuring manner. How did one reassure an egg? Are those meanie psychopath's scaring you diddums?
Standing, she went to fetch another sack of dirt and set to shoring up the little scared egg, building up the earth around it's sides as if that would somehow protect it from harm and evil minds. Unfortunately that was the best she could do.
Sighing, she stood up again to look at the rest of the eggs, not so much loking to see which needed the earth as which caught her interest now, and was met by a strange sight. One of the eggs, for lack of a better word, seemed to be looking right at her. She hadn't seen that from the other side, but it called her now, wandering curiously over to touch the Lurking Stare egg.

For Astor:
WHY HELLO THERE - oh. Oh. Whirlwind Romance Egg did not know quite what to make of Astor and Astor's mind. It appreciates the packing of the dirt, yes it certainly does, but! But - uh, that roaring welcome has died to a mew and a bit of a 'please go over there and away' now sort of thing.
For Kailin:
What the Lurking Stare Egg wants to know is why Kailin is pitying the other egg for? It's a failure. It's absolutely no ones business what happens to that pathetic scared little thing. If this dragon fetus had a note to wrinkle, it would, and there is the brush of distaste at such a - an emotion for that egg that probably won't hatch anyway. Ugh. Lurking Stare shoves it's mind at Kailin, probing as deep as it wants before backing off. Best go off and find someone more fun to play with - like Hero's Call.

Why was she pitying the other egg? Well, because it's scared, was her first thought. Then she checked herself. Why was she pitying it? Did she pity it? As a general rule, if that egg had been a human and had reacted the same to her, she would likely have maybe not sneered, but turned a blind eye to it. If she was honest with herself, she rarely put in the effort to speak to the quiet ones, not when there were more exciting people about to talk about of things to do. So why was she doing it now?
Because it's a dragon egg.
The Lurking Stare egg may view its sibling as worthless, but Kailin could just not bring herself to view an unhatched dragonet that way. That dragonet could make someone very happy, and that was worth something, right? Of course it was. For all she knew it could make her very happy, and she wasn't going to rule out that possibility. That dragonet, if it hatched, if it survived, was going to need someone to protect it, and if it chose Kailin then so be it.
She winced as the dragonet inside the egg shoved it's mind into hers, sifting none too gently through it before withdrawing and pointing her none too gently to one of it's siblings. Interestingly, one of the larger ones. Worth giving a damn about, that one, eh? she thought, somewhat bitterly, before removing her hand from the egg. She gave it a peremptory scattering of earth, pushed haphazardly around it's base, before heading off to the indicated egg. Well, she hadn't touched that one yet, and why avoid it just because a selfish little dragon egg had told her not to?
Heroes Call it is!

The way that the Golden Starburst Egg asked for her opinion only to reassure her on the fact of its own lack of caring for the answer deeply amused Jadore. She knew all too well how easy it was to feel isolated in one's magnificence; hearing a qualified opinion on the matter was a rare and precious gift. One that she herself had lacked of late. How could she not provide the treat for this infant?
"Of course you are, but you hardly need me to tell you, darling," she murmured, using her hand to trace an arcing caress over the egg's shell. Let it hear and feel the confidence she had in herself, let it bask in that warmth and share that emotion. It would, at least, help buffer the little creature inside from the parade of lesser worthies to come seeking an audience. After a pause, she added a compliment she'd heard several times from the lips of a particularly love-struck Harper. Perhaps the man hadn't been entirely worthless after all. "In a sky of perfect stars, you shine the brightest."
Flowery. Trite. But still pretty and hopefully enough to let the egg rest in a warm haze of shared approval and ego.
She stood afterwards and cast a glance at her companions. Kailin seemed embroiled in private conversation or thought and wonder of wonders, Aston was actually busying himself with a sack of dirt. Jadore indulged in a private smile; perhaps there was some use to be had, in associating with that particular madman.
The sack of earth she had seemed still full enough for one, perhaps two more eggs. She looked around and then picked her way through the clutch towards the Infant's Kiss Egg. Having rescued it from mediocrity, it seemed only proper that she tend it now. "Hello again, pet," she said quietly as she knelt beside it and began the process of shoring up its dirty nest.

For Kailin:
RAGE! HATRED! Utter disgust. Sneering, unforgiving disdain. No, the Hero's Call Egg doesn't feel particularly friendly. So Kailin thinks she's clean? Thinks her sins are somehow lighter than her fellows? Don't make this egg laugh. She is a dirty, disgusting, horrible person, better off dead. Oh, and did it mention the HATE?

Kailin jumped back in shock at the violent reaction. Being in a crouch to begin with, this only meant that she feel onto her backside in the dirt bag, nearly falling back over that as well but catching herself on her mucky hands at the last minute, shuffling away from the egg a little more. She glared at the egg as if it had stung her, then stood, dusting herself off.
"I'd stay away from that one when it hatches," she said to the room, a touch of acid in her voice.
Brushing her hands off and snatching up her dirt bag (not even bothering to give it any padding) she stomped (carefully) over to the Jazz Hands egg.

For jadore:
This time when Jadore touches the Infant's breath Egg, there is an instant murmur of quiet (and pleased) acknowledgement of her return. And, again, that fragile tendril of hope of good things and the warm hand on it bringing those good things, it presses close against her. The egg likes the soft words and fingers.
For Kailin:
Disappointment! Such utter disappointment! Kailin didn't like Hero's Call?! The Jazz Hands Egg is shocked and saddened, but that's okay. Hero isn't for everyone! Jazzy there is! The egg brushes a teasing mind against Kailin, a flicker of delight, and cheer, and in the depths of it, something a wee bit more malevolent.

There was something seductively simple about the Infant's Breath Egg. Something so vulnerable. Jadore, who had never boasted much in the way of maternal instincts, felt an answering warmth stir within her own breast.
Of course, immediately afterwards she had to sigh over the hopeless naivete of the thing. Good things? Soft words and hands, here of all places?
She couldn't help but think that the chances of this one surviving were slender, once it broke shell and discovered what sort of options were before it.
A bittersweet thought.
And you, always an optimist, she told herself silently, voice wry and sharp-edged again. She was diligent in ensuring the egg was well packed with sand before standing up and brushing off her hands. There was a part of her that hoped the little thing was strong enough to survive. There was another part that thought it would be no great loss if it couldn't. They needed the strong ones.
Kailin's flat warning drew a glance and a pulse of curiosity. Intriguing. Jadore raised an eyebrow at the woman as she stomped by and then looked back at the egg she'd just left. A few steps carried her close enough to press her hand to its shell.
"Let's see what all of the fuss about, shall we?"

For Jadore:
The Hero's Call Egg roared to life with such anger it felt almost like a physical blow. The egg shook under Jadore's hands, as what was within threw itself against the shell, trying to get at her, to get rid of her. And then, confusion. She had brought the dirt here? It was her idea to care for the others? Fine. Let her do it then. It wouldn't kill her. Today.
