Thaelen
Name: Thaelen Pronunciation: Th-AIL-en Nicknames: Thael, Bobble Age: 28 Birthday: Autumn Gender: Male Sexuality: Heterosexual Prisoner: No Rank: Brown Wherhandler / Wher Patrolleader
Physical Appearance: Thaelen has never been and never will be physically intimidating. He is built like an average Pernese male but with the musculature of a man who has worked alongside a draconic creature for over a decade. So he is definitely healthy and fit in those regards, but that doesn’t change that Thaelen is only five feet and nine inches tall. After noticing (or not), how the handler is amazingly average when it comes to height, an onlooker will be surprised to see his skin is tan. With the blood of Bitra dwelling in his veins, Thaelen possesses skin that is brown and not the pale color one would expect a nocturnal individual to have. The rest of his coloring reflects his ancestry with dark brown hair cropped short and deep brown eyes. Unfortunately, even with the eye color least susceptible to sunlight, after over a decade of living in the night, Thaelen finds it very painful to look around during the day.
Several distinguishing scars can be found across Thaelen’s body. He has multiple marks from dealing with Whers on his legs, but such scarring is expected when working with the most volatile species related to Pern’s famed dragons. Otherwise, besides the usual “scratches” from an active childhood, the rest of the scars come from encounters with prisoners. His most notable is a six inch long line across his left bicep when a prisoner had to be subdued after getting a hold of a sharp object. Fortunately, no wounds Thaelen has ever sustained have ever been fatal or near-fatal and he sees them as marks of passage, a testament of what he’s been through. So do not expect him to shy away from taking his shirt off. Thael will not care if anyone sees that his skin is not as perfect as a newborn babe’s.
Speaking of shirts, when it comes to clothing, Thaelen likes it simple and comfortable. If he has limited mobility to his attire, he most certainly will change into something that allows him a full range of motion. Most likely, Thaelen will be seen in a shirt, trousers, and boots with a belt to carry any small items like weapons or fire-lizard treats. Colors are relatively dark in nature with blacks and browns dominating the color scheme and reds and blues accenting the whole appearance. His belt and boots are simply black or brown because Thael thinks it is downright silly to care if the darn things match his wardrobe. Even what weapons he carries on his person, which are quite a few, have no noticeable or fashionable traits. Simple designs are all he needs thank you very much; however, despite everything else, Thaelen wears a leather wristband on his left wrist and an intricate swirling pattern is it’s only claim to attractiveness. It is a sentimental piece and he would be very angry if someone took it.
Personality: ‘Ello! Top of t’mornin’ to ya! ‘Ow’s the f’lizard t’day? Güt? Güt! Ever been greeted by one of those really friendly people who have such a heavy accent that he is almost difficult to understand? That’s Thaelen for you. He has absolutely no problem saying hello to everyone from the Warden V’tya himself to the most psychotic prisoner (though Machi might be a bit difficult to greet…) even if it means raising eyebrows. Nothing is going to get Thaelen down when he is in his element which often means the Wherhandler is grinning softly or broadly depending on what occurring around him. Naturally, this means Thaelen prefers to have a positive atmosphere about him versus a more negative one. The irony of the situation is not lost on those who know the handler’s personality because as strange as it is, Thaelen volunteered to live at Warden’s Weyr, a place known for not having the best environment. So, most of the time, Thael is not taken serious by strangers with his light-hearted exterior and ready smile. Unfortunately for those who figure it out, the process is not always comfortable.
Thaelen can be uncharacteristically serious when the situation calls for it and he’s serious about his work even when he is having a nice chat with a prisoner. As a Patrol leader, Thael is in charge not only the safety of himself and his Wher, but the safety of the Handlers that follow him and you can bet your brightly buttered biscuits that Thaelen takes care of his own from his insubordinate subordinates to their kleptomaniac fire-lizards, and if someone is stupid enough to harm what the Handler considers his, be warned. He can and will dispatch a man with his bare hands within a very short amount of time because he was trained to kill a man with a body mass larger than his own. So do not cross Patrol leader Thaelen of Brown Thaelesk because he will end you if the uncharacteristic idea decides to cross his disturbingly upbeat the-glass-is-half-full mind.
While his capacity for violence is quite impressive, it is not often witnessed, but Thaelen’s aviatophobia is most certainly a topic poked and prodded into light more often than not. Anyone who knows Thaelen knows how absolutely positively terrified the handler is of flying. Oh, he can marvel at how beautiful dragons and birds are in the air but an observer can just see his face turn green at the mere suggestion of him traveling adragonback. The topic is unfortunately so used up that when mentioned, Thaelen just waves it on by and goes back to whatever he was discussing beforehand though he is sometimes sent running for the porcelain throne when a companion started describing, in great detail, what it is like to fly on a dragon and how it feels exactly when the beast dives.
Now, if you didn’t already love Thaelen for his winning smiles and odd sense of protectiveness, be forewarned that he is a die-hard fan of fire-lizards. He loves the irritating little monsters and with a pair his own, he spoils the poor creatures senseless. The handler even carries a pouch of treats on his belt that are given to any and all f’lizards regardless of what rank their owners have tagged to their name. In the future, it is highly likely the Wherhandler will try to acquire another flying pet to accompany his blue and green pair. As if his deeply rooted affection for the original dragons of Pern were a forewarning, Thaelen can be quite a romantic individual. He most certainly believes in courting a woman and treating the chosen lady with the respect she is due. Though oddly enough, this also means, in a world where a strange version of polygamy exists, Thaelen is most certainly a monogamous individual. Now, this doesn’t mean he will only be with one person for the rest of his life, it does mean that Thael will never suffer from infidelity.
So from the corners of his smiles to an absolute fear of flight, you have Thaelen, a man of his word who will undoubtedly protective you if he sees you as a member of his strange family.
History: For an individual who would eventually volunteer to live in a Weyr built to house prisoners, Thaelen did not have a very exciting history. His parents, Tha’nr of Blue Eijilth and Weaver Journeywoman Aelyn, were both native to Igen and it was where Thaelen would be born only to be passed onto the crèchewomen at three months of age. He would only know the names of his parents, but not their faces or even their voices would be known to the child though he certainly did not mind. Tha’nr and Aelyn would eventually have another son and then a daughter after Thael and then he would gain four half-brothers and two half-sisters with most of the boy’s half-siblings coming from his father. While Thaelen might have enjoyed knowing his relatives, he knew none of them and if he met his siblings, he did not realize the relation.
Even at an early age, Thaelen was fascinated by fire-lizards. His best friend and forever companion as a child was a raggedy blue fire-lizard toy named Bobble, a nickname that would eventually resurface to be used by his Wher. Despite the usual boyhood shenanigans, Thaelen’s childhood was amazingly boring without much commotion or incident except for when he was nine turns old and rode a dragon for the first time. The experienced ended on a decidedly sour note when the weyrbrat grew extremely agitated and the moment his feet touched the ground, the lad proceeded to empty what had been a recently full stomach. It was at that time that Thaelen realized he was not dragonrider-material and turned his attention to the night-dwelling cousins of Pern’s aerial guardians for whom he would Stand when he reached candidacy age.
His first few Hatchings were unsuccessful and to entertain himself, the boy found himself a rider who could teach him to fight. Sk’ler of Brown Triniath was on in his turns, fifty-eight of them to be exact, and not quite eager to tackle the challenge of training a shrimp of a boy when he had more comfortable things to do, but Thaelen’s endless persistence impressed the old rider and he finally relented and took the candidate as a make-shift apprentice. He found the experience to be enlightening and even when the first three turns of his candidacy passed by without Impression, Thael found himself enjoying the time he spent with the old rider. Then, only a few months before his sixteenth Birthing Day, Thaelen Impressed a beautiful Brown who called himself Thaelesk. Training under Sk’ler officially ended with the Impression of the Wher as Thael had to devote himself to caring for a voracious baby, but it didn’t stop him from visiting his mentor.
Wherlinghood was undoubtedly interesting with interaction between fellow clutch-mates and older more experienced Handlers. During his free time with Thaelesk, Thaelen would train with the Wher, utilizing what training he had with Sk’ler to improve his life-mate’s reflexives and offensive and defensive capabilities. He also found help in that regard from older handlers who found the boy’s personal training interesting and useful. Therefore, even without the assistance of his day-dwelling mentor, Thaelen flourished in the dark world he knew. During this time, the young handler Impressed a pair of fire-lizards. The first was a lazy blue named Rama and his clutch-sister, a friendly green Indi. They were welcome editions to the family and their antics were easily enjoyed.
For the next few turns, life was uneventful except for the stillbirth of Thaelen’s first child at eighteen, a baby girl given the name Thanelle. The dead infant was taken between and the handler was left to comfort his current partner, Minra. Another little girl was born two turns later, this time alive, and she was handed off to the crèche as soon as Minra was sure she would survive. Unfortunately, the relationship ended on a bitter note when Thaelesk Caught a young Queen on her Maiden Run. Thaelen did not feel much disappointment over the loss of the woman’s companionship for she had only been a night-dwelling Weyrfolk and did not truly understand the bond between handlers and their whers.
And once again, life proceeded without incident with the usual activities of work and Runs and whatever else the Handlers could come up with to entertain themselves. Word of the building of Warden’s Weyr circulated and Thaelen’s interest peaked. When it was finished, the wherhandler quickly volunteered himself for transfer to the undesirable place despite having a newborn son after pairing with another handler. Due to his fear of flying, the journey to Warden’s involved a generous dose of fellis in Thaelen’s klah and then being strapped to a dragon’s back while Thaelesk was carried in the beast’s claws. After recovering from his interesting way of traveling, the handler was assigned his own Patrol to lead and has honestly been enjoying the last three turns at Wardens despite all opinions that he really shouldn’t be. Oh well.
