AIVAS failed. The attempts of Jaxom and Lessa to end Tread for ever proved unsuccessful, and in desperation, the people of Pern turned to an ancient weapon that AIVAS recalled from eons ago; the nuclear bomb. Surely such a powerful and violent weapon could help them where the Dawn Sisters had failed
But they were wrong. The bomb did nothing more than leave a crater in the Red Star’s surface, and worse, it caused a rain of unidentifiable particles to rain down upon Pern, poisoning its plants, its animals, and its people: the bomb had provoked nuclear fall-out
Now, nearly 400 Turns on, Pern’s society is nigh on unrecognisable. The Holds have broken down and the vast majority of people live in Weyrs; riders and ordinary folk all bundled in together. The remainder are nomadic clan-like people who dare venture into the wilds without dragon protection. The affect of the nuclear fall-out has been severe; animals and people alike have been born with physical deformities, and some children are even starting to show, mental abnormalities; odd abilities that defy understanding.
All these problems and more, Ferus Weyr must deal with. Situated in a beautiful caldera far in the West on the Southern Continent, it’s blessed with good, fertile land and has never been short of food, but political tensions are causing strife. Aside from the usual inter-Weyr squabbles, Ferus Weyr’s unusual management system in which the Weyr is run by a council of elected members is causing a lot of intra-Weyr problems as well. The struggle for power means that the more ambitious of the Weyr’s people are not above resorting to murder and treachery to gain the top positions.
